Shenanigans, I say!
Collins let the Stig out-of-the-bag in 2003, and only now is the BBC worried about revealing his identity? Nah, someone wanted a bigger paying contract and some company refused to pay up.
It's not like there aren't any available wannabe racers wandering about the UK looking to hire-out their talents.
There's an interesting read on the subject by Andy Wilman on TopGear.com.

Well I'm officially telling all of you guys that I AM NOT THE NEW STIG!
But I am starting work on my memoirs as of this moment. None of you have to buy me a beer at any time.
Some say he is Superman without the tights, Others say he's John Holmes without the porn, All I know is that we call him UNEMPLOYED!
I don't believe it. The Stig is actually Sabine Schmidt. I'll go on believing that until I have conclusive proof that her nipple is NOT shaped like the Nurburgring.

There's only one thing wrong with your theory, Sabine is a woman.
Not that a woman couldn't drive like the Stig because we know Sabine could, but she couldn't keep her mouth shut about it.
(I think I've just been hit with the BAN HAMMER by Marjorie) So long folks!
Didn't Michael Schumacher show up as the Stig once? Part of me wants to think this is all marketing hype... since we all know the BBC has inadvertently created one of the great mysteries of the world. I have this feeling the "black" stig, the original white stig, and now this one, are all just games.
Also, I'd believe it was Sabine.

Possible, except Sabine has driven head-to-head against the Stig in several Top Gear episodes. Plus, she has a regular role in Germany's homegrown version of TG.
I'm still in the mind-set that Collins wanted more money, the BBC said "NO" and Collins is looking towards his future. If the Beeb wants to continue the Stig mystery, there are plenty of qualified and under-employed racers to take over the job.
Eh, there can be more than one Stig.... hell, they had a giant black guy do it for one episode... and then there was the fat Stig in the US.... I can see them hiring a doppleganger for Sabine's build type.

Certainly, there can be (even, may be) multiple Stigs. If so, then this mitigates the accuracy of every timed track test on the show - different drivers get different results. Maybe the BBC and the producers don't care, but the viewing public certainly might take a different view of things if that turned out as true.
I wonder how they'll write this into the show. Years ago, they killed off the black Stig by having him drive a car off an aircraft carrier, so presumably the white Stig will suffer a similar fate.
Well it won't be as bad as when they tried to do the Dukes of Hazzard with replacement for Bo and Luke, but it is unfortunate.
I don't believe there's just one "Stig". With as popular as Top Gear is, I just don't see Ferrari handing over a car to be shown to the world to anybody, no matter how talented. I think the Stig is just a very clever cover, so factory drivers can drive cars.
Now for the bits with the Stig doing challenges, I could see that being him. But yeah, that sounds a bit set up. Maybe Ben will have to face a new Stig to win his court battle or something.

Maybe the BBC is filing suit because Collins' book reveals that there really is more than one Stig. If this is true, it lays waste to the Top Gear "concept" of using a single driver to set the benchmarks of performance.
Considering some of the antics (and crap) that occurs on TG, credibility should be a minor concern for the BBC - it sure seems to true of the producers.
GUYS!
Clarkson said that when he re-created the show, he wanted to avoid having the driver be known so that the focus will be on the cars, not the driver.
Ben does the day to day work, the majority of programs that call for "Stig" when a factory wants their driver to drive the car (like Ferrari with the FXX) then they suit them up like the Stig and let them go at it. It just happens they let him out himself as the Stig because Clarkson wanted to interview him and to try and mess with people.
The German Stig was probably Tim Schrick, due to the slightly taller stature and longer hair, but it doesn't matter since all we care about is that the driver is fast (which he was if you've seen the episode) and consistent.
You know what all this goes to prove? That the BBC is a bunch of frickin' geniuses. Here we are discussing a man/woman who may or may not be that one guy, or several other guys, or girls, and now wwe'll probably go home and watch Top Gear for hours on end looking for discrepencies. The toughest part is gonna be if one of them IS Sabine, she's kinda skinny like, and her womanly features would easily be hidden by a racing suit.
You want a good driver to road test cars in different areas, but you want THE SAME driver doing the car testing on their home track so that there is a consistency to the driving skills and therefore some validity to the timing differentials.
But there are MANY roles for the Stig, not just lap times. I'm sure all the lap times, aside from the FXX and maybe a few other "special ocasions" are the same driver. What about the stig coaching SIARPC, challenges, fliping a light switch, using public transportation?
