Neat. Interested to see how the new motor works out.
Best of luck to ya man! I was at this stage 2 weeks ago and was about ready to call it quits, though I had the entire car sanded down and blocked. Also a much smaller car. I hate bodywork
Like I said, keep up the good work!
me to man, bodywork has never been my thing but i do feel like i'm kinda getting the hang of it. The car is fairly straight overall but right now I keep getting hung up where the flare rolls into the panel. . . keep taking to much then I have a low spot that follows the arch. I just cant find the right block or technique for that area.
If it's right at the arch, I had good luck with a high-grit paper wrapped around a wooden dowel and sanding in a direction normal to the arch so that each sanding stroke works on both the arch and the main panel.
good call! I worked on it a little more this afternoon with more success. I was more or less doing what you just described, working up and away from the arch at a 45 degree angle to the body line, slowly but surely.
The rear arches are so close I can taste it. . . all the small low spots around the car are flat again, the only thing thats still kicking my ass is the body line on the front fenders. . . I had to build it up a little with filler and I just can't get the shape quite right. I may cut a custom block just for that task but it's getting close otherwise. Fell short of my goal to get it in primer this weekend but I must press on, only 17 days till we leave for vegas with the colorado caravan. It will be ready, sleep or no sleep
last year I laughed at this picture. . . this year it's a little to close too home. lol
3 corners down. . . one to go
going to shoot primer this weekend, what size tip do you guys like for high build paint?? I have a 1.4 but I have been told a 1.8 would be better. thoughts?? gun is a hobofrieght HVLP gravity feed.
Ahh so you are shooting the whole car? Nice work taking care of the rock chips up front too.
yeah the front of that hood had more bare metal than paint left, and the rest of the car has tiny chips down to primer. plus the passenger rear door has never matched quite right. not sure if its one big coincidence but every tornado red 4000 I have ever seen has a mismatched passenger rear door. needless to say the fender flares made a good excuse to paint the car.
busy weekend
couldn't have done it without my best friend weston. thanks a million buddy. time to go get a beer
Mannnn I hate red cars but can't wait to see how this finishes!
That pain job looks awesome!
Yeah man, your paint turned out WAY nicer than mine...
i just noticed that your door molding have gone away.......
Nice job. That will keep them from falling off...
thanks guys, it really came out better than I could have asked for. wes laid down that tornado red like a pro. we did it all in a two car suburban garage with 2 box fans in a window and a cracked garage door. not the best conditions for painting by any means. starting saturday afternoon we shot primer & guide coat, woke up at 7 the next day, blocked it all out and shot single stage color by 7 sunday night. today we did the bumpers and spoiler. . . right after finishing up the LY3D paint, i glanced outside and the car was slightly speckled with tiny rain droplets. we scrambled to move the bumpers, pulled the car back in the garage and blew it off with compressed air. . . needless to say the spoiler will need buffed a little bit now thanks to the wave of dust/moisture that came in with the car. but otherwise all went according to plan. favorite quote of the weekend: "when you tell people it was a garage job, they wont believe you"
Oh, and as hard as it was to get that side trim off, i'm not so sure it would have ever fallen off!
When this thread first started I thought this would be a cool beater to take skiing but now this thing is a show car. Wow! Its good to see it getting a full refresh. Tell me its not going to plow through snow anymore

Wow. That thing is wicked cool. I don’t see those things on the road… …EVER. I don’t know if Audis weren’t sold in the south 25 years ago or what, but you just don’t see them around. Yours looked pretty good just a shade lower with the old-style wheels and such on it. Now, with new wheels, flares, and paint- wow. Pretty, pretty car. Can’t wait to see some wider shots of the new paint.
Are you still even close to challenge money on this thing? I know the wheels probably aren’t, but the rest?
hahaha wes and I had this conversation all weekend long because his german-look bug is even wilder than my build. . . something like "when did my keep it simple track toy/driver turn into a show car?" lol I guess one of the reasons he and I get along so well is because when we set out to do something we go all in, take it as far as we can to the best of our ability.
It's deffinetly gone further than I ever intended . . . but I wouldnt have it any other way, this car is finally turning into the euro I have always dreamed of owning, and yes It will still get plowed thru the snow! I own them to drive and get used, first and foremost. my Z was alot more beautifull 2 1/2 years ago but the memories I have made and the fun I have had driving that car far outweigh a few chips and dings in the finish. . . . this car will be no different. weston's bug will be no different. thats one more thing we agree on. built to run hard.
as far as the budget goes, take the wheels off and this car is still very challenge friendly. . . that statement will get tougher as I stuff the new 5cyl turbo engine in the car after vegas. Not like I broke the bank on the parts I did buy, but there was a few more issues than I had planned on. One of the reasons I am proud to rock the GRM banner is because that has been the theme of this project from day one, do it yourself, do it right, but do it on a tight budget. For me it's more about the spirit of the event than showing up to win. showing people you dont need to spend 5 digits on a car to make it cool, fast or nice. even if I can't meet the budget criteria when its making boost, I would still love to drive it down to florida, leave the ESM's on it and run as an exhibition class. even in that trim this car would still be hovering around a 3 grand budget cap, believe it or not.
Also, I can't wait to show you guys the total package, I just want to get it together and infront of a nice backdrop first, should only be a few more days.
Wonderful work!
Now I need to paint my race car :)
This my Dad's Audi 4000S we had in Germany back in the 80's.
He sold it just before I got my learners permit.
Something about not wanting to pay for a clutch job back here in Canada hehe.
thats a nice looking 4k, like the color. it reminds me of one that was on rival house garage a year or 2 ago.
got the car 99% complete again, just waiting on one door handle. it hasn't left the garage yet, been busy working, rebuilding a formula v shifter, and staying up till 6am putting an audi together
WOW that looks great.
Yeah when we brought the car back from Germany to Canada it was via a transport ship.
Dad went to pick it up. Someone one had "swapped" the steering wheel for a FOX wheel.
Huge compared to the Audi's stock wheel.
Took forever to get a replacement to the annoyance to my Dad.
And yes that car suffered from the over rev issue.
We traced it to moisture getting into a control box. Sealed it better no more run away revs.
At least it was a manual so Dad could clutch in.
What system did you use to paint your car btw?
way to go jay. its looking good man. i was super happy to come and throw down some paint on it. also this is my first post on this forum. jay (2k4kcsq) has been wanting me to join this awesome and amazing forum. ill be posting a build thread on all the work ive done to my bug here soon.

jay used a single stage paint. the brand of paint was Nason, if i rember correctly. it was either Nason or Utec....im not 100% tho. ive used both in the past a lot and i liked them both. they spray easy.
correct, paint was nason and it laid down beautifully all things considered. primer was rustoleum high build. Man. . . thats a crazy story about the steering wheel. I would be livid if someone messed with my car while it was being transported can't trust anyone these days.
Glad to see you over here wes. . . this place is just to good to miss out on. and it's perfect for car lunatics such as ourselves.
