this backdrop may look familiar
Needs a bath, needs a good detailing, could use a buff and wax in the near future but one thing is certain, it will be at the palace less than 32 hrs from now.

yeah that's why I haven't done it yet, just saying. . . eventually.
made it. the trek went much smoother this year
the 5 cylinder going in is a KH 10 valve turbo from an 85 5000. thanks for the complements on the paint, it definetly has it's flaws but for a garage paint job it came out extremely well.
the mesa is actually in the background of those pics, along with the bookcliffs and mt garfield. not sure if it has a number, I have always known it as little park road.
wuste was amazing as usual. a lot of people seemed bummed out about the venue but I didn't really have one complaint the entire weekend. met lots of new people, stared at quite a few awesome cars many times over the countless laps we made around the parking garage (my favorite part of this event), laughed at a few others, more cars than ever, we rallied to get westons bug running before the show, it worked well enough to take that car on its first shake down run in the vegas afternoon heat, from the palace station to the speedway. What an adventure that was. but we all made it. he said my car would be red again in a weekend. . . it was. I said his would be parked next to mine in vegas. . . it was. but the show is only a small reason I cross the desert for wuste. . . its the party, the good people, the comradery and of course, all that euro eye candy. here are a few of my favorite 4k pics of the weekend for thread content. . . yes, that's what its for. . . content.
Traditions.
Everyone has their own, whether it's making the same event every year, or just certain things you cant live without on any non specific road trip. I've only been going to wuste the last two years, but my tradition list is growing rather long already. in the name of car folklore, I thought I would share a few.
-Colorado Caravan?? Check. what a turnout this year. . . almost 100 cars registered!! Always one of my favorite parts of this weekend.
-Make an Impression on arrival?? Check. This was 5 minutes after checking in at the hotel. I looked out the window and couldn't resist taking this pic.
I think people liked the 4000 this year.
-In & Out of towners Thursday night?? Check. people were fumbling to get a photo of the 4000 when I rolled out of the drive thru that night. Also met Jason and his buddy Kennon there, A couple fellow Colorado dudes who drove a pearl white Audi 200. we all got along so well we ended up spending a large part of the weekend with those guys, glad we met up for sure.
-Hoover Dam Cruise? Check. The number of people on this drive must have multiplied by three in it's second year of existence.
My 1 year old fuel pump started to act up on the way home from this drive. . . an omen of things to come. but luckily Jason and kennon waited up for us and made sure we got back to the hotel. thanks again guys!
-Friday night opening ceremony?? Check. I think the crowd Friday was bigger than the show on Saturday last year. Making laps around the parking garage looking at cool rides and mingling was probly the most fun I had all weekend.
Make it to the show together?? Check. Like I posted before, the shakedown run for weston's new turbo set up ended up being a las vegas freeway drive during rush hour. . . we had a few issues to deal with along the way but we all made it. If your an adrenaline junkie, you should try to wiggle yourself under a lowered car on the white line of I-15 sometime. . . it's a bit of a thrill.
Sunday Night photo's?? Check. it's way easier to get the back drop you want after most of the crowd leaves. Someday I will get the right equipment for good night time photography.
Sunday Night drinks on the 107th floor?? Check. My wife and I decided to go up in the stratosphere for a few cocktails because we had never been there. totally worth it. What a view, good bartenders, quiet, chill lounge, good music. . . perfect night cap.
Cedar City Utah fuel pump swap?? Check. For two years running I have had the luxury of swapping the CIS fuel pump in the same exact autozone parking lot. . . exactly one year later to the day I exchanged the little rabbit pump that couldn't any more out for another because no one carries the proper 5 cyl pump in stock. Hopefully next year the addition of EFI and a bigger, proper flowing pump will end this tradition.
Sunset pics on the drive home?? Check. Last year one of my favorite photos was taken at sunset on mile marker 1 of I-70. I decided to keep this tradition going with even better pics this year, albeit a little closer to Colorado this time since we made much better time
Well, that's it. My wuste documentary. You really need to be there to understand how much fun this event is. It's like a tailgate party four days long without dumb crap like football. . . just cool cars and like minded people . . Brandon (the founder of wuste) said it best. . . there is nothing else like it anywhere.
Awesome to see you doing to so much with it already.
Just my $.02 though, Are you planning to do anything with the front corner lights? They seem so dark and I think amber or even clear ones would make the front of this car pop.
omg jay....wow you really documented this past weekend soo well, i wont even try to document it. you nailed this event on the head.
to anyone who has ever even thought of going....please do your self the favor and just DO IT...GO!!! ive been going now for 4yrs strong, and ive never have NOT had a bad time. like jay said.... and i also agree that the parking garage party that goes on is just sooo chill, each of the 4 floors we get to ourselves seems to have a little bit of a different party on each floor. but its awesome. and the people their are all about helping one another out. for instance, some other unlucky CO people had their head gasket blow on their 2002 audi 1.8t. all they did was post a pic of them broke down off I-15 about 50 miles out of vegas on instagrahm, and a guy responded that was at the show that had a covered trailer. he immediately left the show and went and picked up the audi. when the guys that owned the audi offered up to pay for gas/beers...the guy simply responded with..."just pay it fwd" . so thats the type of people that wuste attracts....kind minded people.
i was soo proud of jay and his 4k and the looks/ respect/ attention that his car got this past weekend. much deserved for all the awesome work that jay has put into his car.
and i also wanna say i owe a ton to jay and our other friend holden (bagged red mk6 jetta) for dropping everything to stay and help me get my car running enough to make it to the show late. i seriously could have not asked for a better weekend with my friends.
btw, jay this little part in your post had me laughing out loud.
" If your an adrenaline junkie, you should try to wiggle yourself under a lowered car on the white line of I-15 sometime. . . it's a bit of a thrill."
omg this is epic....ya it was a bit scary for sure.
heck yeah man, I like your comments about the different vibe from each floor. That's the stuff that keeps me walking till 4am, next day wondering why my legs feel like I just ran a marathon. it would be interesting to calculate how many miles we do walk on any given year also, like I said before, the roadside repairs and whatnot will be the longest lasting memories I take from this, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I couldn't ask for a better group to spend it with either. bigger and better next year right??
and in reply to crankwalk: If you scroll back a few pages you will find a conversation (with pics!) I had with a couple other audi guys in regards to the headlights/corners. the plan is to someday score a set of euro market cibie headlights that are a dual element one piece design, much more attractive and far better performance than the stock hella's. If I manage to keep this thing under a challenge budget they will have to wait till after that atleast.
Your pictures and commentary do justice to how much fun this type of show is; its not a "don't touch my car" type of show!

to comment further on your post....another quick story...
we where all walking around and our friend Holden is a bit of a vw diesel geek. we ran into a mk1 jetta diesel that had all sorts of super uber rare parts on it , one being a rare period correct turbo kit for the diesel. Holden asked the owner if he would start it so he could hear it run....the owner hands Holden the keys and says, " heres the keys, start it for your self man" Holden was like a 16yr old girl at a justin biber concert. hahaha it was awesome. just a super chill atmosphere to say the least. also i found out that walking around the garage for 4 nights strait was also friendly on my wallet as i was on the tight budget end of things. all you need is your choice of beverage, and start walking with having an open mind to meeting people and are ready for a good time.
Exactly! That was the sort of thing that always turned me off about car shows as a kid. that and the guys that sit behind their car all day with nothing but smug things to say when people try to compliment them I just don't get that.
at this "show" you are more likely to see porno cards tucked into every crevice on a brand new audi, or a pile of beer cans stacked sideways inside the fattest lip wheels in the garage. . . blow up dolls riding shotgun, complete with event t-shirt! not like there is no respect for the cars or anything. . . it's just a few of the friend on friend shenanigans you see over the weekend. I already can't wait.

Ahh ok I see it now, those look fantastic too!
Ugh your pictures are killing me!! Some of my favorite pictures i've ever taken seem to be in all the same areas...
I must move out there.
Car looks INCREDIBLE!

Say What?
Just read this thread front to back...OMFG, youre a madman, exactly the kind of madman we like here. How have I not seen this thread before? Im speechless...the flares look PERFECT! And I love the coilover conversion on the cheap...Cheap doesnt have to mean junk...this is an incredible example of that. KUDOS!!!
wow, I gotta say it really does mean a lot to hear all the positive feedback/encouragement around here. . . i'm not really the modern socialite that most people are now days. no facebook, no instagram or twitter, I think I checked my short lived myspace about 5 yrs ago. . . but I get on the grm forum almost every day, seeing all the crazy awesome builds that go on here just pushes me forward that much harder. I felt honored when alan emailed me about hot builds. To be picked out of this group feels pretty good when you see and know what everyone else has going on in the garage.
Lately I just get that cool car idea (flares for example) stuck in my head to the point of near obsession. It's hard to focus on anything else with what spare time I have till I get that project finished. I drive my wife nuts sometimes but she's a good woman and kind of understands it. I have a lot of sidelined projects thanks to this quattro, one being her Nissan 200sx SR20 swap. She has been hounding me more and more about it, but as far as "honey do" projects this one is about as cool as they could possibly get!! So where am I going with this rant?? the 4000 may have to stay together and just be driven for a short time while I tend to some other projects. The updates may slow down a bit, but but rest assured, this build is not over! stay tuned
oh and swank: where do you live that has you in my backyard so much?? or are you a flyin miata open house regular??
Heh, i live in Indianapolis. I haven't been in your backyard for about 2 years, but i'm about to be at the end of the month again.
I think my second picture would have been on the other side of the valley from yours. That was near the top of 65.
oh yeah I recognize the view looking over cedaredge. . .
you'll have to shoot me a message when you are in town. i'll show you some of my favorite twisty roads.
