Why would someone haul shingles in a Firebird?
oh, thats why...
Yep, adding on to the house. Luckily I only needed a few more bundles, the rest of the supplies were delivered. Lowes will pull all your lumber, load it up and deliver it for $59. Sounds like a good deal to me.
When I bought the house 5 years ago and remodeled, the living/dining room came a bit small. I'm adding 6 feet to remedy the issue. It may not sound like much, but it's enough to make a big difference in the end. Concrete was done 2 weeks ago and I framed it out with lots of help from my dad and brother over the long weekend. 4 days from slab to fab! Still need to wire, insulate, tear down the old wall, sheetrock, blah-blah-blah and pass many inspections. Hope all is done by labor day and a new deck to follow shortly there after.

Theres Dad supervising from the roof. Hope I can still swing a hammer at 80 like he does!
Nice. If you want this thread moved into the Builds section, just let us know.
If you feel its a better fit there, please go ahead.

Gearhead,
If moved, you might also want to suggest to the mods a better title.
Nice!
I'd love to bump an extra room out on our house, but it screws up the roof too much. Adding the room wouldn't be bad as the concrete is already there, but it would require totally changing the direction of the roof pitch in that area. Technically I could bump out a room on the front of the house and not mess with the roof, but that would look weird.
And I want to know what Pops eats for breakfast, cause he sounds like a badass!

Is this an old wassau home?

Not sure what a wassau home is, but this isn't a prefab or kit house.

Turning a gable 90 degress is a fairly standard thing. Just keep the peaks at the same height.
Pops like oatmeal with flax seed or poached eggs and dry wheat toast in the morning next to his black coffee. Did I mention he drove here (Michigan) from Georgia in his 1967 Chevelle?
Today was roofing day. While the addition is only 6 feet, the old over hang had to be cut out and then feather back the shingles. 260 sq feet of roofing to do by myself. (family has gone back to GA) Took me 10 hours Yeah, I'm sloooow.
Second side did go faster than the first, and only threw the hammer off the roof twice in frustration. Oddly began humming Ted Nugent songs after hour 6. The sun had cooked me pretty good by then I guess. Started to rain as I finished up, so water test is underway.
Siding tomarrow....

I guess my play on words was a fail. Oh well.
I found it clever, addition looks great!
This weekend was roofing and siding. Did the roof alone, had help with the siding. Need to tie up a few loose ends and call the inspector...
The new shingles match better than the picture shows, but when wet the old ones turn dark while the new ones stay light. Odd. At least they will be covered in snow 5 months out of the year so no one will know!
T11 siding is not my favorite, but its easiest to just match the house. Was able to re-use some of the existing siding. Tips on painting this stuff that doesn't involve a brush and roller?
Airless spray gun. You should be able to rent one from HD or the like for under $50 a day. Gun the paint on, but keep a brush in you hand to "back brush" and fill in the small spots.
Prime the wood first, then topcoat.
Cheek spray gun from harbor freight. Then back brush over the sprade areas. I have striated cedar shakes and I have found tho to be the best way to do it. About 80% of your time painting I spent getting the paint to the wall. The spray gun reduces that hugely. Back brushing helps het the paint in to rough areas or cracks.

X2 on your choice of material hauler
I've had 10 sheets of 4x8 3/4 tongue/groove + 10 2x6's in my 1998 Firebird.

The past 10 days have flown by with lots of small things adding up. The framing has passed inspection, rough wiring is in and approved too. Currrently working on the ouside trim and soffits to complete it being weather tight. After that i'll finish the wiring, insulate and start tearing down the old interoir wall. Its supposed to be in nearly 100 degrees this weekend too
10 day check-in. Time flys when you're swinging a hammer. I'd rather be turning wrenches, but staying on track. Wiring is finished, outside trim and soffits are finished, and today the insulation was completed. Think pink! The old wall has been picked at here and there, should come down tomarrow.
Some of the wood and trim was reused, makes it hard to see in the picture, but saves a few bucks!

Looking great! Nice bit of living space added.
old wall came down today. Theres some rot in the flooring where the doorwall was and I have to patch the hole where the vents were. Shouldn't be a big deal. The room feels HUGE now, I may have to get a bigger TV.
So I cut out an 11 inch wide slot to remove rot and the old heat vent holes. In order to reduce the sawdut mess I put down a tarp, ran the saw so the "exhaust" port was aimed away from the carpet, then hooked my shop vac to it.
fired up the vacuum and saw togther for a wonderful concert of noise (note the ear muffs in the first pic, yeah they were on my head when I hit the switches) Worked fairly well, easily getting 70% of the sawdust. Had to stop and fuss with the cord and hose a couple times, (22' long cut) a second person would have made it easier. Glued and screwed in some new wood with extra support to tie it into the old floor. Rock solid and ready for carpet! (once the drywall is all done)
Was supposed to get the final inspection today (final electric was passed Tuesday) but came home to an approval tag for the insulation. Nothing failed but nothing says final either, now I'm confused. Will call on Monday to get this cleared up as they are closed on Fridays. Hope to have the outside painted this weekend.
Nice.
I am amazed at how quick and easy GRMers make this stuff look!
Yep, it's a gov't operation for sure. No one returns your call and who ever you need to speak with is never in the office. Finally got to speak with the inpedctor and he wants the drywall up before the final inspection. This is completely opposite (but not suprising) of what they told me before. In the meantime I have painted the outside, got rid of last scrap pile, (after the photo of course) and moved the ceiling fan to re-center it in the room.
The paint match is very close, the different ages and roughness of the wood make it look a bit darker. At a glance, it looks like nothing has changed other than the deck being gone!
Well that month went fast! Victory achieved today by passing final inspection! Much rejoicing!
Drywall was done late August, hired that out. Had the new section done and repaired some bad work in other areas of the house. I painted the bathroom, office ceiling, and basement stairwell. I'm hiring out the mainroom because I want it to look good, not like something I did myself. The house was largly emptied of stuff save for the masterbed room through out this process. For 2 weeks I was living on drop cloths, plastic sheets covering the kitchen and didn't even have a working bathroom for awhile. Glad thats all behind me now. So stressful. All thats left is final painting and the carpet. having a hard time finding carpet to match, Home Depot doesn't sell this stuff anymore (5 years old). I'd like to do the deck this fall, but might wait till spring. So tired of this stuff.
I'd post pictures, but photobucket hates me today. will try again later.
Much overdue update time.
First off, a big thank you to David Wallens for recognzing my work in this months issue of GRM. I never thought a stack of 2x4's and some siding would be such a task, but it certianly has been
Painting has been done for quite a while now and I've slowly put the house back together inside. Just need to hang a few pictures and get the carpet done.
Decided to do the deck now, glad I did. When spring comes I can concetrate on fun stuff in the garage again!
The TV may look low, but when you sit down its right at eye level.
The deck should have been easy, but took almost a month. Lots of measuring and head scratching. Only being able to work for 45 minutes or so after work (before it got dark) didn't help either.
Posts and beams
Phase 2 complete. Ready for decking.
The wonderful Bowwrench. You need one, trust me. On loan from Adrian.
Complete!! Glad I did it now instead of using up time in the spring.
It's 12'x20', though it was going to be too large, but once everything was on it, feels about right. (everything not pictured)
Now I need to find something to do for the winter. Might be time to build that V8 coffee table...
