What is this unhealthy fascination you have with rear ends?
i was going to comment that the outside/inside arrangem nt would look very wierd.
on the suburban, the shocks went to a plate that was attached to the frame and a crossmember in a corner. also, one went foreward, and one backwards. (if i remember right). can you go forward with one?

One of them is going forward now, I changed to that arrangement. The sub used an odd plate that mounted to the top of the frame rail instead of my bracket which mounted inside the frame rail. I could potentially retrofit it.

To recap from a few dozen pages ago, this truck, 1972, had both in front of the axle. In an attempt to calm my wheelhop issues (which are probably now solved by the leaf spring), I splayed them one forward and one rearward, which improves resistance to resonance. In theory. I suppose I can ditch that plan and make everything much easier to mount, but I still think it's valid.
Amazon is weird. Today I got the front swaybar bushings, but not the rear. One spring perch but not the other. I got something else I ordered yesterday but the shock studs will be here on Monday. huh.

Splayed is definitely better. Missed that you were doing so.

It's not unhealthy, rear ends are great!
tuna55 wrote: Nope nope nope, I have another idea. Colleague Jim (who I have often derided for wanting to tighten flat head screws such that the flats are all aligned rather than how tight they were) and I spoke for a bit. I called him over as an expert witness on symmetry. He agreed that one mounting arrangement on one side and another on the other side would look weird. The conclusion we came to is that it may be possible to cut down the damper mounting bracket to recess it further towards the frame rail, thus missing the swaybar mount laterally. I'll just slice off a couple of inches and redrill the holes based on those in the frame and be done. Yeah?
That won't work. I can only gain maybe 1/4" this way. Time to think of something else.
I actually did get the rear swaybar bushings today! I also got one perch. Weirdly. I strung it all together with some bungee cords (I don't want to tack anything in until I have both perches at least), synched down the suspension with a ratchet strap, and took a look. Now I'll let you take one too.
Not super happy with the aesthetic of the perch not centering itself with the bump stop. I m also not sure I care. Notice the lower damper mount and how it's very close to the swaybar. Both are at full compression positions.
Not very evident here yet.
But it will clear. Not by much, but it will clear, and the swaybar will be less in the way at ride height. I am happy. One more glory shot.
When the second perch gets here I'll weld in the new swaybar mounts and weld nuts for the bushing clamps on the underside of the perch. I'll then attach the swaybar end links to the frame using the cool bracket, and swap over to the new endlink poly bushings. After that I'll bolt in the shocks and fix that one stud location. By then I should have new U bolts and anchor plates in hand awaiting the new springs.
Yeehaw!
The best part about picking cylinder heads (CH350H, which will look the same as my heads, bolt to a normal intake and the ram horns, but perform a bit better than Vortecs) now is that in a few weeks I can actually start trying to convince Tunawife to let me buy them!
and, more woohoo, the other perch will arrive today, so I can tack weld everything in place and get ready to mount the bar for real. If it's a super productive night, I can even get the lower shock mounts finished.
Last night I forgot to mention I installed the new Jeep sender.

Just to add, I not only splayed the dampers but also moved them much closer longitudinally to the axle, so that the stock angle (over 35 degrees!!!) was reduced to something manageable. This is also a 'good' thing, but it was also done to reduce wheelhop, which was probably solved during the time this board decided to kick ass and buy me replacement springs. I'll leave the damper mounts as I laid them out, as it is technically superior, but it does pose some interesting packaging challenges.
No matter, I have a grinder, a drill and a welder. It will all fit.

That is it. This is or should be the GRM motto. I love it!
In fact, the forum should insert this exact phrase in its entirety when somebody types in the word "can't".
For example:
Those holes don't line up! I (cant)"I have a grinder, a drill and a welder. It will fit" get those bolts in.
Not sure if that is going to make sense, but I like it.
Keep up the good work sir.

2-4 week anticipated lead time.

That would be an excellent modification to the expletive filter.

That's odd. The website didn't mention anything about a lead time. Herm. Sorry man. :-(
You ordered them on the 19th, so they should get here no later than March 19th. I figure in that time I ought to get the rest of the rear suspension ready, the bed back together, and the filler tube finished. That way the springs are the last piece and I can move on to the front suspension.
If they fit! I am a bit worried about my relocated front rbacket having to move again with them, but I'll figure that out either way. I already moved 'em once!
solfly wrote: i love that there's progress on this build nearly every day
I let you down yesterday! Sorry. I also have a date night planned for next Saturday, so plan ahead on no progress then, too.
My bad then. Oh well, it sounds like the timing will still work out all right.
I just want to say, Tuna returned the add-a-leafs he bought (and has no use for now) and kicked in that money towards the springs. What a guy! I just checked my Paypal balance and I'm at 528.54. It started at 0. I've said it before, Tuna has said it before, and other people here have said it before, but, berkeley it, I'll say it again, you all are fantastic.
