As promised, the day after the garage sale (& date night) I went back out in the garage. Unfortunately, I did some RC car work, so I only got time enough to drill out the giant old muffler hangar and get it ready for retrofit (I'll re-use it sans giant rivets and rubber bushing).

I also was able to throw the 32 ton bed floor back in place to check fitment with the fuel tank, spring hangars, and fuel filler. All clears thus far! I'm not planning the fuel filler while I have it all mocked up. When the new springs arrive, I'll take it off and paint everything.

No updates.

Why?

The Tuna-sister-in-law is getting married. She's a bit over the top. She mandated dresses, Tunawife purchased. She asked for a smaller size for some reason. Guess what happened.

So I spent all night cleaning up tears and looking for a corset online. No, not that kind, unfortunately.

Say no more, Tuna. I'm sure a select group of GRMers would be happy to go meet with Tuna-sister-in-law and explain to her that, while it's her day and all, she needs to be reasonable and leave Tuna-wife be who she is, so that Tuna55 can get back to more important things like taking care of his family and finishing his truck project. We'll just need a few volunteers and an address...

(edited to add the requisite smiley face to confirm the humor and non-literal intent of the post)

I am feeling different tonight, so let's be different. I have a laptop in the garage for the time being, so let's go play-by-play instead.

So first off, let's examine, the filler tube crosses the frame at an angle, aimed forward. Brilliantly aimed at the filler neck. Not so brilliantly aimed at the tire. Not enough clearance between the sidewall and bedfloor, so I have to aim it perpendicularly across the frame. Once I get the bed floor off. Again.

Had to pull off the rear mudflap thingie. Believe it or now, a ratchet failed to get it out (it just spun), but a drill with a 1/4 extension and 1/2" socket wobbled enough to grab the leftover threads and it just came out.

Going to have to clearance the bed cross sill to give the sending unit a bit of room. I figured the hot ticket would be to tip the bed floor over using the drivers side tire as the fulcrum. I walked across the truck (first the passenger side tire, then the frame rail, then the axle, then the other frame rail) as it slid down. I think my arms are four inches longer now.

Cut the section out of the cross sill, what's that noise?

Tunakid #4 is crying and Tunawife is showering. See? This is why work doesn't get done fast around here.

The big downside of working with a laptop in the garage is that I now have a clock.

Cross sill is sectioned and patched up. Looks OK.

Now it's time for that upper damper mount (just replacing the stud to match the other side, remember?) Should be quick.

Damper mount done and the nut is welded, now off to put the bed floor back on to test fit the cross sill clearance and the fuel filler.

On. And it clears. Not too happy with the tube sticking out of the sender, thouygh. I will have to bend it a bit. No big deal.

The fuel filler looks closer, now, too.

In other news, it's way too late. Good thing I don't have to be awake serving breakfast for four cranky kids in six hours or anything.

No pics for you guys today, that's the downside of this laptop, can't use the USB port. I'll get them uploaded tomorrow. Let me know what you think of the play-by-play format.

Does the laptop not also take pictures with the camera?

You need to upgrade, start some live streaming of the action as it happens!

It's a work laptop, some things are allowed and some things are forbidden. Plugging something into any USB port gets you a nasty E-mail from corporate IT. It's webcam is disabled as is its CD-ROM, and in a way that I cannot change.

The wife found the power cord to her 2000 ish Toshiba. That may be my next garage lappy, and then I could put the pics on with no issue.

Oddly enough, the locked down work PC allows Facebook and Pandora. Weird.

Just got the notice. Tunawife says no more spendy until summer. It's going to be a struggle to figure out what to do until then, especially as I am out of welding gas. I still have the fuel filler, the chassis saver, the front swaybar and a few other odds and ends to finish.

Not asking for money, please. Just a note.

Can't hurt to post up parts needs. Some of us have stashes of parts sitting around waiting to do something, maybe you could use them. Can't think of anything I have off the top of my head that you'd need but I have crap off of cars from the 20s through present foreign and domestic, ya never know :)

This is when it would be convenient to be in the block sanding phase. Sand sand sand sand sand sand sand. That would take up time.

Mazda:

Indeed!

Jim:

Good call.

All: Beware, this is not a call to buy me stuff. I neither desire nor deserve the charity that I've already had from you guys. If you have anything laying around, I am open to receive it.

Bed bolts: A bunch of 5/16" carriage bolts. Very short, 3/4" long or so I think. Along with that some 5/16" screws, GM folk will know what these are and look like.

Stuff to make a fuel line. 3/8" hard tube along with some rubber tubing - I think I have clamps.

Some form of performance head, intake, cam for the ubiquitous SBC.

Anything which can help me figure out how to rebuild a manual transmission.

That's all that I can think of for now that people may actually have lying around. If anyone has anything extra that they can give/sell/layaway to me, let me know.

By the way, no update tonight - the Tunakid is bringing his Awesome R/C truck to school tomorrow, so Daddy is making sure everything is working well, adding a good body mount to the rear shock tower, soldering on the right connectors to the new NiMH battery and babysitting the charger. He's going to be king of the kindergarten tomorrow. (Thanks to all of you for that stuff, too!)

I really don't want to stop.

Likely that I'll push Tunawife to let me buy bed bolts when the Leaf springs arrive to finish up the rear end and then start the transmission. I already have the parts, and it will probably take a while since I've never done it before.

After that, I'd love to have a compression test and look at some pieces of the engine, which are all free.

I already have the front swaybar and bushings to install on the front end, and if I modify anything else up there I'll make it free.

I need to mount the driveshaft (for the first time) when the leaf springs arrive and check pinion angle.

So I'll stay busy. No worries.

So here is the picture of the new upper damper mount to match the other side.

Here is the bad fuel filler angle

 photo DSCN5055_zpsd49cd974.jpg

Tonight, I installed the new clamps I got to hold the swaybar laterally. I need to do this because the brackets for the dampers are very close to the bar bend. No pics, because it's boring and obvious.

I then attacked the fuel filler. I mocked up the wheel tub and mocked up the bedside. I drilled a 1/2" hole to rough in where the filler tube would penetrate, and then got to work welding and cutting pieces of old exhaust tubing. It actually went really well. Here is the end result.

 photo DSCN5062_zps47f1bf4c.jpg

Looks simpler than it is

 photo DSCN5061_zps4738d0b3.jpg

And now a simple reducer, rubber elbow, small bore straight shot to the filler and then a rubber section to attach it. I can't really do the rest of fully weld the tube until I bolt the bed back together for the last time. Not bad, though, for an hours work.
