1/21/2020 EDIT: if you've scratch built both a frame and a body for your car, you may have luck talking to American Collectors' Insurance

________

TL;DR - GRM Hive mind; several of you folks have scratch built cars before.  Who do you use for insurance?

Long version - many of you have seen my long, slow build of this car.  I made the chassis, I made the body.

It resembles a 1930s Datsun and not a 1950s lotus, but the situation is similar; The DMV has given me a title, but I need to find an insurer so I can get her on the road.  What companies would the GRM hive mind recommend talking to?

Hagerty say they will ensure a kit where the body is supplied by a manufacturer, but they don't want to ensure something where both the frame and the body were built by the owner.I  I'm talking to a Heacock representative, but haven't gotten a quote from them yet.  Who else should I talk to? I don't want to ensure this like a daily driver. I already have one of those. What I'm looking for is an insurance policy for an occasional use collectible car.

Yes, I have read this article in Classic Motorsports, and yes, it is giving me the names of some companies. What I'm wondering is if any folks who own a scratch built locost have first-hand experience with finding and insurer.

I am unfortunately of no help here.  The MG and Willy's Truck / Blazer chassis thing are insured through hagerty.

I really hope you find an affordable solution.  It would be so sad to get this far and have insurance ruin it.

I appreciate your input, regardless.

When I bought a 90% complete (titled, plated, somewhat drivable, but definitely not actually done) Locost, I just called up my State Farm agent.  That was kind of an interesting conversation:

Me: Hi, I just bought a new car.

SF: OK, make, model, and year?

Me: Well, that's complicated...

SF: OK, how many doors does it have?

Me: ... What is a "door", exactly?

They wanted a bunch of pictures and a copy of the sales paperwork to document the value, but it was actually pretty straightforward.

Call an independent broker and put this question to them. It's what they do.

Ask around at an autocross to see if you can find a broker there.  You'd be among friends!

You'll need to log in to post.
