As cool as they sound, and excellent they are at rustproofing whatever they're installed in, any Detroit that makes more power than a Ford 360 is really too heavy for this.

The 7.3s have their few annoying things that can fail, but for the most part, they don't break a whole lot. There's also the option of saying "berkeley mpg" and just putting a cammed 6.0 LS in it or something...

I would lean towards the 7.3 as o think it would be easier to pack in there than the Cummins but I might look for the International version, the 444 as it will be in a medium duty donor where you could rob the transmission, power steering and other bits.

I'm tempted to see if that will make it to NY and get a pickup bed for it.

Do it! Not only would you get a different pick up than the guy next door but you would also get a full man card

I was thinking more like giant hot rod, suicide axle, Z'd frame, all that fun stuff, but giant pickup works too.

Holy Wow!! A low rider bus. He's a little more ambitious than I am.

That's quite the build he's got going on.

Saw this on Barn Finds. Get it and tow it behind SanFord as your runabout dinghy.

That's a great idea, someday. Also, "Find it here on eBay in Pomona, California with a BIN of $7,299." soulful make you feel good about how much you paid for Sanford.

NO!

Cool bus. Seems kind of expensive to me.

My toad will be the Japanese Warrior. It's probably 4000 pounds lighter than a 1948 bus.

Pricing old buses on the internet, they are all over the place. I've seen basket cases for $10K and runners for $3K. There isn't any rhyme or reason to it as far as I can tell.

As with most projects, life gets in the way. Between work, family, cancer trying to kill everyone I know, and being out of town, not much has happened on SanFord. Small, quick, projects is all I've had time for.

Small parts have been sandblasted, primed and painted...

The exhaust vent for the water heater got a new grill.

I figured out how to get the side windows out, dismantled, and ordered glass and rubber glazing seals for them.

I finally have all the new seals and glass for the rear windows, but no time to install them.

Other than that, lots of research, planning, and thinking.

I have decided to strip the entire body, all the way down to the steel, for paint. Doing all this work and putting a E36 M3 paint job on it would be stupid. Sandblasting is out, soda blasting and media blasting is expensive just for the materials, so we are going to try water blasting.

With that in mind I picked up this today.

It's like sandblasting, but uses a pressure washer and water rather than a air compressor and air. It should eliminate the warping and the dust. I'll let you know how well it works.

Video of a guy blasting a truck.

More to come, but I'm not sure when.

now that's something I could really use as I'm susceptible to blast dust, thanks for posting

could you let us know how it works out

Still on some little projects. I've been out of town for the past couple of weekends.

This afternoon it was a latch for the back door. It had a hasp and padlock. That wasn't going to work. I wanted an emergency exit in the back of the bus, so that meant being able to open the door from the inside.

The latches came from EBay. They are a vintage looking latch for a teardrop camper.

Naturally it didn't line up with any of the existing holes, so I've got some patching to do. Other than that, it works perfectly.

Another little project. The pollen down here has the air outside literally yellow so outside time is going to be limited until it rains again.

I pulled the water tank a couple of weeks ago. It had a couple of places that looked like they had been patched. Today I filled it with water and watched it leak. I'm not going to spend the time to patch it and have it leak again, so a new 40 gallon tank is on the way. The new tank is a little smaller so I can relocate the water pump to a place I can actually get to it without standing on my head.

To off set that, I also pulled the water pump this afternoon. It works.

Interesting that it's a diaphragm pump. Kind of reminds me of a mud pump.

More to come...

There was some interest on the Skoolie forum about the water pump. I wanted to test the pressure switch anyway so I shot a short video while I was at it.

That is a interesting pump design! No impellers to wear out. But usually used with dirty water.

That looks like an old Par / Jabsco marine pump. Usually not used for fresh water, and eventually, that diaphram will fail and start spewing.

The more common Surflo type water pumps are usually an internal multi-diaphram pump (no impellers, as they generate 40-ish psi). And some of the fancy ones are variable speed to avoid the water pulsing when you turn a faucet on just a little bit.

Are you running a compression tank?

In reply to RossD:

I think the original build used garden hose as a pressure reservoir. I will be putting an pressure tank in. Probably made out of 3" PVC. It doesn't need to be big, it just needs to keep the pump from short cycling.

More progress today.

Back door glass is replaced.

The side window is glazed. I still need to finish painting the slide tracks and get the felts replaced.

And this showed up today courtesy of Amazon. A new black water tank to replace the existing one that is made out of chip board and fiberglass. Not exactly pretty, but kind of necessary.
