...just got it and wonder where the best places are to jump start my learning curve... I've been wandering around all day on the 'net (I mean, working..) and haven't found anything like I'm used to (i.e. MR2.com; RedPepperRacing; FEOA; etc).

Doc?

(it's the 22R, 2WD, 5-speed)

Thanks, Stan

There are no sites on fixing or repairing old Toyota pickups because the never break down. :)

A great truck!

I got most of my 22r (non-"e") info from the 4x4 boards. 4x4wire.com and pirate4x4 or such. That seems to be where all the carbed 22r tech is relegated to (not that I have any problem with 4x4 toyotas...I'd love one!). Hopefully others will have better sources for you, but those'll get you started "working."

Beware the miles of vacuum hose.

When I did the head gasket on my truck with the 22r.. I lost track of where all the vac lines went. So I just started plugging them. Damned if that truck didn't run OK with half that crap removed. It's a good carb though.. No issues.

I like yota tech. I had a 86 4x4.. If you have any questions shoot. The truck was damn near indestructable... cept for rust.

hang out with the mini trucking crowd if you want to lower it. prerunner/baja types if you want to lift it.

I've gotten some info from Pirate4x4.com. Great Truck. I have an 86, now EFI with MegaSquirt. I am starting to have some rust issues. I fixed the floor a couple weeks ago. Now I have to find one more leak. I think water is coming down behind the dash somewhere. Maybe the master cylinder holes in the firewall, maybe something else. After that leak, I can put my new carpet in and reupholster my seat. I'm going with red on red on red. Got the carpet from autopartswarehouse.com and I bought a full cow hide (50 sq ft), red Spanish leather, to do the seat in for $230 delivered from weleather.com.

Replace the timing chain rail with a metal one. I bought one from engnbldr when I rebuilt the motor. Timing chain went and bent the exhaust valves. I could have got it back on the road for a bill or two, but I thought, hey, 290K miles, may as well rebuild it. The holes had 3 thousandths taper. The crank needed a light polish. It was cheaper to buy a complete head ready to bolt on from engnbldr than to rebuild my old one, so that's what I went with.

I have a 1994 22re with the 5 speed, great little truck. It has 206K on it and doesn't seem too want to quit. Has a 1100lbs payload so it pulls its own. The big 3 issues are the time chain, original radiator, and rust proofing. My dad and I did the time chain, it isn't a bad job, but you do have to about half take the thing apart and there were like 18bolts in the timing cover including a hidden bolt.

The original radiator are aluminum w/ plastic top, are worth replacing when it craps out with an aftermarket brass radiator which cost around 100$.

The body on my pickup is starting to rust out. The passanger A pillar is rust through so the bodies aren't great on these cars.

Other than that they are great and have a decent after market. I can get performant parts for this POS pickup that are about impossable to find for the mercedes, which is a sporty car. Stupid but true, you can probably go to the toyota dealer and get TRD stuff.

Good luck!

You'll also find a good bit of info on the Celica boards. Little more performance oriented. Yota.tech can be decent, just don't ever let them know you post here, or know of me.

I think I've still got a set of Turn-6 swaybars for a 2wd Yota. They worked nicely. 7" wheels will fit, just barely.

Thanks to everyone for their input and suggestions. One of my favorite things to do is learn about a new vehicle, although really knowing a car is good too, of course.

I wonder how people with only new cars pass their time...

Foxtrapper, what's up with yota.tech? Are they a bunch of hardcases or just don't care much for newbs? And what's your rep there? (If I say, "Foxtrapper sent me" will I get banished before I get started?).
