That pretty much sums up my ownership.

This is where I'm at with the race cars. I don't really like working on them but doing so allows me to afford two of them.

So what do you consider 1st tier manufacturers?
I've had great experiences with the Mazdas I've owned, for example... I know it's not exactly a scientific study, but in my family or immediate circle we've had probably 20 or 30 miatas, 3 or 4 Mazda 3s, 3 Mazda 6s, 2015 Mazda 5, a few Rx-7s, my 2007 Rx-8, etc., and I'm currently DDing a 2021 ND Miata. All have needed minimal/appropriate maintenance and very few have had unexpected failures.
I'd much prefer to wrench on them than the Hondas, Toyotas, Subarus, Chryslers, or GM truck that I own/owned?

That's a great explanation of it. "The worse it is, the greater the triumph over it." Perfect.
It all comes down to trading time for money, or the other way around. I enjoy working on my vehicles, and we have enough that if one is down for a few days everyone can still get around.
Gotta say I hate Subarus too. My 2007 STi, bought new, was one of the worst built cars I've ever owned. It had more rattles at 4000 miles than my german cars had at 140,000 miles. Interior plastics and materials were just garbage, paint was something like 1mm thick and chipped instantly, seats were incredibly uncomfortable, spring rates didn't match the shock rates, bad tune made the ring lands break, oil pick up tube would crack and starve the engine, on and on. Happy I sold it early on, have no desire to buy another one.
Another facet to working on your own cars is I find that I feel more attached to the car the more I work on it. As long as the work goes well of course. Ill often find myself very attached to a car right after finishing a bunch of small projects getting it ready to sell. I still usually let go - I realize my fondness is temporary and I follow through on my decision to sell - but it's definitely harder then.
Quality bonding time! It's important for cars too. Hehe

I think it comes down to the WRX & STI being Imprezza based (in my mind anyway).
They are odd cars for sure.............I've likened them to being Japanese Volvos.
Got her done. Just have to get the alignment done and I'm farming that out to a local place. Happy I did the work myself, I always am after I get everything cleaned up. I have a neighbor that's about half my age that does some fabrication work so I went over and asked him if he had a better air hammer than mine (btw 1/5 stars for the cheap harbor freight air hammer. the only good thing I have to say about it is it doesn't fall apart.) he didn't but he lent me his torch. It was fun, not sure how much it helped but I was probably misapplying it. got completely done about an hour ago including taking the rental tools back to autozone so yeah, it's good.
