I'll have some time on my hands this August and have always wanted to see it. And the machinery.
Yea, it's great. One important thing- before heading out, keep an eye on the long term weather- this past year was rained out. Which is to say the salt was too wet, and never dried out properly. I have been there when 3" rain fell- which turned it into a lake. And lets you know that while it looks flat, it actually varies by a few inches. Which does matter when going +400mph (our car didn't come close to that, but I have witnessed 421mph- pretty amazing).
It's addictive, and a massive design and engineering challenge. And dangerous.
In terms of the vehicles- best car show ever.
I have been a few times as a spectator. As alfadriver mentioned it's actually been rained out the last 2 years in a row!
The best advice I can give would be to bring ear protection, a BIG hat, and very dark glasses.
It really is a hoot to see some of the creations that come out to the salt. Most I would call very grassroots.
I've had the same idea running thru my brain. Do you camp on the flats [motorhome]? Is there anything nearby? Do you go for the whole week? Any event with cars I'm up for it.
It seems to be the opportunity for every poseur hot rod in California to drive around on the salt and show off, but otherwise it's a very cool event. The pits are wide open and very welcoming. The actual race cars are fantastic.
We stayed in Salt Lake and drove out to the flats for the day.

You can't stay on the salt. There is some camping as you get off the salt- but most competitors stay in hotels. Being that we were there to run, we stayed at the Motel 6 in Wendover, UT. All week.
There are some camping places in town, too. And it looks as if some of the casinos in Wendover NV let people camp in the parking lot.
Most of the cars run over the weekend- as Californians come out for the weekend to go back home. But the serious runners stay all week. As the crowds thin, it's easier to get runs in, to do development work.
Vehicles vary a LOT- from a 50cc bike (that was looking for a rider), an X1/9, a Focus Wagon, a bike motored Swift, BIG block runners, lots of roadsters ('32 Ford bodies), lots of old cars, lakesters (open wheel streamliners), and streamliners. With hundreds of cars running, it's quite possible that none of them are running head to head- in the same class.

FWIW, lotion does work.
