Avalanches are just re bodied suburbans, same GMT800 platform. You can get them in 3/4 ton if your worried about towing and then it comes with an 8.1 but the price is usually much higher and harder to find.
Vans make one hell of a tow pig, just lack of 4wd may be the only issue depending on your needs.
