Everyone is "fine". Gunter Schaldach walked away, but Joe Foster had to be cut out of his Mazda and was taken to hospital.
They were under caution for about 1/3 of the race...
I was watching when this happened. They wanted to cut Foster (I think that's his name, it's the car that Dempsey co-drives) out of the Mazda but he said don't do it. "This is my car and I have to pay to rebuild it."
I just saw a shot of them hauling the remains of the Mazda away. They cut it all up to get him out and said that he, Joe Foster, had to go to the hospital. The Camaro driver was Gunter Stahlback. He got out under his own power.
This is a case study in the dissipation of energy.
The Camaro crash looked spectacular where as the mazda just came to a stop. I actually cringed when I saw how the mazda went in. Especially from the on board camera. That was a hard hit / sudden stop.
Tumbling bouncing rolling are all good. Sudden stops not so much.

They actually interviewed him afterward and he summed it up pretty nicely.

A long string of four letter words?
like the commentator said, i think the throttle stuck on the camaro. notice the nose of the camaro goes down once very briefly then comes back up before going down again when the fronts erupt in flat-spot smoke.
he must've been uncomfortable walking back to the garage with all that poop in his driving suit.
Yikes - there's a lot of speed coming up on 1. In the video they said his brake pedal dropped to the floor - maybe got them pumped up enough for the lock up, but he was already way past the braking point.
In his interview he said he hit the brakes going into 1 and nothing happened so he got off them and hit them again, still nothing, then bam. That matches the one shot they showed from thw rear doesn't match with the front shot where you can see the nose drop, then back up then the fronts lock up solid before he hits the Mazda. I bet the telemetry tells the story best.

I saw it live too, it was first- "oh, crap", and then when the camaro disappeared, I was speechless.
Very relieved that the safety worker who ran up game the thumbs up. And was stunned when he climed up the hill.
Foster seemed fine, but the reports they mentioned was that he complained about some neck pain from a previous injury- which is why they were so careful. Too bad they had to cut the top off the car....
Racing was pretty good.
You know that photographer that was over there? This is what he saw.

Yeah - WOT. Had he not been on the gas, the initial impact would have thrown some yaw into the picture. But you can see that the LSD / locker under throttle actually straightened the car before it hit the gravel.

recipe for destruction....

damn, how far did he go after going over the wall? was he trying to drive it out of there, because that would have been pretty damn cool..
also, i notice that there is an actual throttle cable on that car instead of a fly by wire setup. is that normal for race cars with LS engines in them? notice how the cable has slack in it even with the throttle pegged at WFO- the throttle body itself stuck for some reason.
