I am moving into my new shop! It is 3300sf, but that is still too small, so I built a double decker car storage platform to store two extra cars on top.
What could go wrong?
Naw, that isn't going to work!
I'm just putting light cars up there, under 2000lbs. And using a winch, to get one set of wheels onto the platform,
then raise the ramps to get the rest of the car onto the platform.
I just can't let this 89 Tercel go, have to hang on to it. :)
I applaud your ingenuity but the triangulation on that looks massively under specced. One good hit and that's going to collapse unless it's fastened to the building? Even then the side legs look pretty vulnerable to me.
Clarification. As a carpenter, this scares the E36 M3 out of me. From the apparent lack of lateral stability from the posts to the beams, 2x6 material in that span with a car on top, and the lack of adequate triangulation. Please either don't do this or beef it up significantly, and for the love of dog please don't go under it.
Are you setting that up to film some kind of fail video for Youtube?
That deck doesn't meet standards for even having people walk upon.
Maybe if you added a lengthwise beam under the center, some trianglation, and fastened it to the two walls...
Well... having that Tercel crash to the floor in a pile of splintered wood is one way to let it go...
Only perimeter support? Limited triangulation? And you live in Sacramento?
I can see a little shaking taking that down in a jif
When there is this kind of unanimity on here you should really take notice.
Bad idea. We are trying to save you from yourself. We value your well-being.
If the platform was a little taller, you could put the cars on the ground and lighter, less dangerous things on top.

I think "double decker" implies that there will be one car above another car.
The height does look a little low for that.
yes, I think a second floor for lighter stuff and storage would be better than trying to stack cars.

Hey, maybe he'll catch it on camera and it can also become a gif

Remember, he is nimble.
Another place to submit this . . .
Besides the risk, I look at all of that wood and compared to the cost of an actual 4-post lift, I wonder how much money was really saved.
