I'll start by saying working on cars isn't my strong suit. I'm an adequate mechanic on my very best of days. After six months of noise I finally figured now was the time to do the rear brakes on my 02 Accent. They've been making a bit of a clunk/tapping noise as I slow to a stop.

I just got the drums off and....shoes are great, pad material for days. What else could make noise in the rear brake system? Could it have just been some rust stuck in the drum? FWIW the passenger side drum, the one I'm pretty sure was making most/all the noise, was a B to get off.

Any advice is always appreciated!

Clunking/tapping noise could be just a part stuck somewhere. Had the same problem on my Eclipse a month ago. Making noise like pad to drum contact. Removed the drum, everything looked fine, reassembled and the noise is gone. Sometimes all that's needed is an adjustment. Brake adjusters live in a pretty hostile environment and get stuck often.

After dousing everything with brake cleaner and staring at it real hard I put the drums back on, drove it, and no tapping. It still sounds like it's grinding a bit for the first few stops though. Still a win in my book, returned the brake parts and bought myself an oil change.

Grinding on cold stops, particularly if its humid out, is a fairly common complaint. Something to do with modern compounds, and no asbestos.

The clunk type noise- there wasn't a spot or line of rust on the drum surface, was there?

In reply to Streetwiseguy:

Nothing when I looked, but it's entirely possible something could have been knocked off when I was trying to work the drums loose.
