Jackk,

If you are asking for advice on clearing those codes, you may have better luck on the main "Off Topic" or "Grassroots Motorsports" forums. This "Shop Talk" forum is designed to allow our advertisers to directly connect with our readers.

Thanks!

P0174 System Too Lean (Bank #2)
P0171 System Too Lean (Bank #1)
P0440 Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction
P0441 Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow
P0446 Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction

Does the truck seem to drive normally?

You may want to start with:

  • faulty vent control valve
  • blockage at the vent hose, vent filter or vent control valve
  • open or short in the vent control valve circuit
  • bad charcoal canister
  • EVAP system leak
  • faulty EVAP system pressure sensor
  • bad vacuum switching valve (VSV) (Toyota, Lexus)
  • stuck open purge valve (solenoid)

I'm not an expert on this one, but I'm just sitting around eating, so I did some research. When I was having problems with my solenoid (in one of my Fords) a month back, I just cleaned it, but it was only throwing one code. This may just be a good way to start. If the truck is running fine, take your time.

Joe, can't you move this or do you avoid the IT world?

I avoid the IT world as much as possible-- so fittingly, I don't have the keys to the castle. I do have a herd of geeks to call upon when the need arises though!

I'll see if we can get this moved.

First place I'd go is to see whether the purge valve is stuck open, or the vacuum hose running to it is split.

Vacuum leak is most often the cause. In this case, probably in the EVAP system.

This. OBD2 codes are riddles. You have to put them all together and be like Scooby Doo to point you in the right direction.

The first thing I would check is a vacuum leak between the solenoid/valve and intake. Then check for various other vacuum leaks. That would explain all of those codes. I'm pretty sure yours is like most others of the era... the solenoid controls whether or not vacuum is sent to the evap valve. If that is the case, a good place to look is the valve itself. They often develop leaks in the diaphragm or start to split where the two halves are glued together. It could be a broken evap solenoid case allowing a vacuum leak, but I doubt its a malfunctioning solenoid. They are a pull-type solenoid. If it stuck open, you would have the faulty evap codes, but not the lean codes since it wouldn't be a vacuum leak. Same goes for stuck closed. However, cracks in the plastic of the solenoid where the hoses connect could be an issue.

Does the evap vent into the intake manifold, or into the intake boot? Another common issue is a tear in the intake boot bellows. That could affect both.

The two code types could be unrelated - you may have both problems independent of each other, but if the codes were tripped at the same time, 9 times out of 10 they will be caused by the same problem.
