Sure looks like Rick Dobberton's J2000. I would have almost thought Matt Hay's T-bird, but it didn't have turbos, just the two SC's hanging out in front of the front tires....

This one looks freshly rebuilt. I assume since it's gigantic piece of E36 M3, i shouldn't bother buying it for future hilarity of some sort?

Unless you have a use for it, or someone to buy it, I wouldn't bother.

Damn, I thought we might get in a few misses before a Hot Rodder replied!

I subscribed to Car Craft when that car was first built and was all over the magazines. Still impressive almost 30 yeas later. Wonder where it is now...

I also subscribed to Car Craft when the J2000 was done. It is still impressive, especially since Rick did most of the work himself. I would have loved to been in his shop, I bet there were some crazy ideas floating around.

If you were interested in building an opel, chevette, isuzu i-mark, etc then I would, other than that its probably not useful for anything exciting. Maybe buy it and put it in an opel gt?

Considering he later built an amphibious 6x4 truck/boat/RV thing out of a stainless milk tanker trailer, and then said he was going to drive around the globe in it, I'd say the "crazy ideas" part of your statement is the understatement of the century.

In reply to Ian F:

Rick still owns it, and the Chevy II. He built the Orbiter extreme off-road rig thing and then the backers all dried up and I'm pretty sure he sold it off. In the last 10 years he built a 100% custom real amphibious car-thing that he's been trying to sell on the internet for $100K. His 90's website is still up (and almost up-to-date) and has details on the builds.

As for the Pro Street stuff, there's a killer thread on Bang Shift right now of photos from the CC Nats in the late 80's with all of the famous cars, including the Hay's TBird, the J2000, etc. Cool stuff, though the bizarre draw-though turbos with Dominators feeding into a blower hat that opens to the atmosphere as well are still bizarre.

Wow. You're right. As soon as the butterflies open all the boosts from the side superchargers escape.

I bet an new V6 Camry could outrun it in the quarter.
