Yikes. Good decision.

No particular reason to worry about, or notice the thrust bearing until you are trying to rebuild one properly. Pandora's box and so on.

Gas cap was loose...

I found parts for my old 318ti were CHEAPER than the parts for my old Hyundai Tiburon.
Also with window regulators, scrape and clean out the old gunky grease and replace. Old grease turns sticky and binds things up
Not to mention, the address for the car ended up being a sketchy-looking garage in an even sketchier part of Baltimore...which is already has a pretty high baseline sketchiness.
I left my wallet in the car when I got out to look at the car.
Oh well, the search continues for a DD replacement...I think I'd like a nice pre-'92 MB 300E or TE, but they seem pretty thin on the ground here.

Or being an E36, it probably needs some EVAP work.
Yikes! The car sounds scary. Good call on running away.

That grey one showed up on my radar. It's really tempting for me, though about a 2 hour drive to go look at it from Baltimore.

It does look really nice, I'd offer to check it out for you but it's actually pretty far out of the way for me as well.
A kid from my church family has a '95 ti that he may be selling after we put the cooling system back together. It's a neat little car, with shockingly little rust, and the M-Sport bumpers and seats. It's got about 180k on it, and it will be a little under Challenge budget. This is the kid who learned to drive stick in Ursula the E12, FWIW.
I worked on a project a long time ago with a guy that bought one new. Hadn't seen him in 15 years and he called me out of the blue a few months ago. I asked if he still had it and he was astonished that I remembered we had discussed it in passing like 20 year previously. I was astonished that he still owned the car.
Says something about the car, or the guy, or both.
