The pre-88's had all sorts of suspension issues, mostly relating to the parts-bin nature of the whole car. The front suspension was lifted straight from a Chevette, and the rear from the front of the X-bodies (Citation, etc.), none of which had very good geometry. The front had such bad steering kick-back over bumps that they ended up adding a damper, which really killed responsiveness. They designed an entirely new suspension, front and rear, for the '88 model year that fixed all those problems. Then management killed it.

Typical GM fashion, perfect something and then kill it. Pity, because the '89 was slated to get the 3400 Twin Cam, which would've made it a real firecracker, and a convertible option.

I'll just leave this here. https://www.youtube.com/embed/IEi6BsV8Bpw

I think their neat, just spent a couple hours pulling my newly acquired 86 fiero apart! Neat car, planning on either putting the b207r/f35 from my 04 Saab 9-3 or an ls4/f40 in.

Owned a 300 bhp turbo 88 GT I built for 25 years - great cars.

If you are just a street plodder you probably won't be able to feel the difference between the pre 88 and the 88 suspension, but for those into performance, it makes a big difference.

In reply to NickD:

They killed it because the sales numbers weren't meeting the goals.

No one was buying, so away they went.

Go read the link I posted on page 1

The 4T65EHD out of the Impala SS that the engine came from, with the owner's own TCM that he builds and sells at Magnashift.

In reply to Stefan (Not Bruce):

I was remarking less on the reason on why they cancelled it and more on the timing. GM got the car all sorted out and then it got cancelled the next year, which seems to happen a lot with them.
