I am looking for a good low cost scan tool that will hook up to my 07 outlook, SWMBO's 07 328 xi, and the kids 05 town and country. Functions needed are reading codes, resetting service engine soon and check engine lights. Power programming would be nice but not essential.
Smartphone, OBDII dongle, and the "Torque" app.

I've heard mention of the torque app, will it read codes across manufacturers lines?
And isn't the obd2 dongle expensive as a scanner?
Get one that can read and reset power train codes and SRS codes. Yes these are more $$$$ but well worth it. Take it to the dealer once to do this and you could have got the tool.
Never mind, i just looked it up on amazon and very reasonably priced, can anyone confirm if it works with an e-90 bmw?
thats the screen i run when testing cars.
this screen is from my montana.
i've used my $12 OBD dongle on a fiesta, 3 different montanas, a 02 ranger, 2012 fusion, QX4, 96 accord v6 and a 98 318i and it all worked fine. The GMs and QX4 there was extra PIDs i installed to access more info from the ECU.

The torque app wont?
Don't know if it will or not but what ever you get I recommend that it ahs these functions. I have been working on more modern cars latly and I am for ever needing more than just basic codes to diagnose and fix things.
An example of this is if you change a transmission on a X-Type (basically a re badged and gussied up Ford Contour) you need to clear the transmission programming and then go and put the powertrain in to Leaning mode otherwise you will drastically shorten the life of your new transmission.
SRS/Airbag warning's are not part of the basic OBD2 and are far more often a issue than basic engine codes. ABS is another thing that you will not be able to look at with a basic OBD2 unit and has been around long enough that it is in hat we would now consider "older cars".
The short of it is don't be cheep on this tool. To have a dealer or other shop diagnose anything other then the basic OBD2 codes costs $$$$ Getting back to the X-Type. The dealer wants $160 to do it. (I called and asked and I had to get the car towed to them to have them do it)
I have been using a Snap-On unit at my friends shop lately and really like it but it is way overpriced compared to others of similar function.
