Step daughter was just given a 2003 Mercedes ML500.  Car appears to be in excellent shape, but I would be VERY wary of any 15yo luxo barge.  A semi divorce settlement.   Problem is that the retainers for the mounting screws are stripped, and I can't get them out or put screws in to hold the plate.  Any suggestions that do not include fire?  Just drill new holes for screws?

Thanks, Chuck

If they are the plastic insets that pop into the bumper, cut them in several parts with an Exacto  knife, pull the chunks out, and get new inserts at the nearest auto parts store.   Otherwise, get some larger diameter stainless steel sheet metal screws at the hardware store.

I usually just put a bigger screw in the hole.

If you can get the screws out, just use a bigger screw. Sometimes the screws themselves get stuck and you have to grab them with pliers and pull while you twist.

There's always the Rivnut solution also.
