The clutchable blower on the Falcon... Any basis in reality?
Not doable. At least not back then. I dont know if it's even doable now, but for the movie it just added a bit more aggression to the scene.
Every Diesel Locomotive you have seen from about 1965 till 1990 had'em. Turbos started getting more popular.
Oh, and F4U Corsairs had a geared supercharger. Low ratio on the ground, but once at altitude, they switched it to high ratio (faster).

Umm...if that's a 2 cycle EMD you're talking about (basically a huge ass Detroit Diesel) I believe the roots blower HAS to be running all the time...otherwise engine no run. It isn't there for a performance boost...it's a scavenging pump.

Talking 4 strokers but ain't cool how if you make it bang every time you have to blow the thing to get it to work.
