Thanks to you guys Lil Stampie now knows a Mad Max reference. If nothing else comes out of this thread at least we have that.

Clean the maf.  My 94 needed it every 30k miles or so.

And the answer is ... we suspect a leaky injector/s. Asked the owner this morning in person and he said it won't start when warm unless you floor it. Go out and sure enough it'll catch but stumble and die. Hold the gas down and it starts rough but then smooths out. We put a fuel pressure gauge on it and within 15 minutes of shut down it loses 20 psi. Pulled the easy plugs and driver's front looks nasty compared to the other 2.

Because of money issues it was decided the owner would try seafoam to see if that helped and if not we'd look at replacing injector/s.

Pull the fuel pressure regulator's vacuum line off and check to see if it has fuel in it?

Well that was also a thought of mine. The owner kinda decided not to put that much effort into it.  That's when I learned he'd been putting up with the problem for months. He promised to let us know how the seafoam worked so I'll probably update in a few months once he tells us .

That's kind of awesome/hilarious/something. I will try not to let this thread go into the category of troubleshooting threads I check regularly to see what the real answer was...

His cat is probably trash now.  Brilliant!

Too poor to fix it properly months ago (BTDT, got the shirt, etc) so now it’s a set of injectors, seals, plugs and a cat!  That’s gonna sting.

Make sure they understand that they are a moron and should have at least looked at it months ago so they could have sought help and a used set of working injectors and new seals for dirt cheap.

Okay. So I changed the oil and filter on the S-10 today and dove straight into the spark plugs and boy did they squeak with rust as they came out. Now it was getting dark and I hurried a little getting everything done. Fired it up. Lot of 'water' I hope coming from the tailpipes and smoke. One search said unburnt fuel due to poorly reconnected wires. Too dark to see the color of the smoke. Maybe there's 4.2 qts rather than 4.1 qts in there. Might be a good push to put new Duralast wires in there. Phew. Have at it. Oh fired it up after the oil change no smoke. Only after the plug change. Should I drive it 90mins round trip to the 24hr AutoZone tomorrow? I am not a shill for AZ by the way.smiley

Did you smell the smoke or see arcing around the wires in the dark?

No Stampie. Billowing from the tailpipes. Not too smelly. But the truck has regularly been rich on start up anyway. I'll have to find an old timer for the carb I'm thinking to pass emissions. Runs bloody good otherwise. Now that I think about it I avoided lifting the hood. I'll try to do that tomorrow.smiley

Uh yeah I hurriedly forgot to reconnect the last wire. Doh. Put new wires on this morning with a new PCV valve. The old valve was oily and old looking but nowhere near as bad as the old plugs. Smoked none at first then a little after a while warming up. The choke didn't adjust automatically but it fires up instantaneously now so with a gallon of lacquer thinner later in the week I'll go back to the test center. The air cleaner to carb gasket is almost gone so another late trip to th 24hr Autozone after work and I broke a very thin plastic tube that goes from under the air cleaner to a connection at the back of the air cleaner so the internet should tell me what that is after a dozen searches. smiley
