Funny. I always refer to my fellow "motivated travelers" on road trips as rabbits. You know how when you're on that long stretch of highway, and it's you and like one or two other cars that are about 10-15 mph faster than the majority of traffic. Not racing, not tailgating, not being dicks, just more or less a small pack of faster rabbits. You take turns leading the pack but stick together for sometimes 100's of miles. Anyway, one road trip my rabbit took his exit after many miles and I said out loud, "damn, I lost my rabbit". Chuck gave me a curious look as I have never owned any type of rabbit, so I had to explain.

Me too and love it. But I do not use the term Rabbit. A Rabbit to me is the guys driving as fast as me but drives like an idiot with higher speeds and lots of lane changes yet I still tend to overtake him regularly. I like him in that he will get pulled over WAY faster than I will.

I often will "crowd" the speed limit. Depending on conditions and traffic (i.e. as long as it's safe and not too obnoxious), I may be running about 10-15 over whatever's posted. I love to find someone that just has to drive faster than whoever is around them. I then can follow a half mile or so back, while watching for their sudden application of brake lights.
My comment when one of these guys pass me, "Oh great! I've got a rabbit."
In horse racing (my background), a rabbit was the term for a horse that went out fast at the start, only to fade to the back of the pack at the finish. This was sometimes done for the benefit of another horse (a strong closer) in the race that was able to sit back during the early stages of the race, conserving energy for the finish, when all of the front runners were backing through the field.
The rabbit will spend the early part of the race in front, but finishes in the back.
