Back in the mid 2000s when I worked in the industry, GM and Chrylser rubber (engine mounts, bushings) came from the same source.
What makes the german stuff so bad?

There was some chemical that either they didn't use or couldn't use for German regs reasons. The rubber would either crumble after a few years or go slimy after a few years.
