I know most of you hate Gawker, but I am on the same boat with this guy. These Toyota commercials are horrible and the people they are interviewing are just waiting to be made fun of by the South Park guys.

"It's got stuff that guys like, like rims and sleekness." WHAT?

Check the rant thread. I already ranted about those shoulder-slumping commercials:

Jalopnik is behind the curve, yet again.

They are horrible and so are the commercials.

HORSEE36 M3.

Life is about the drive to get where you want, even in your damn beige appliance. If it was about the ride, I'd be on the bus or subway.

I guess that puts me behind the curve as well. Sorry for not being up to date bra. I've been traveling a lot which has put me watching more TV than normal at night and my god those commercials are obnoxious. I'd rather hear 30 seconds of Dave Matthews Band and I think they are no talent assclowns like Michael Bolton.

Its all good, just can't believe someone thought those commercials were a good idea.

Also Jalopnik sucks so hard that they were behind the curve, not you.

BTW the thing I hate most about the "real people" ad, by Toyota, GM, Ford or whoever else, is that they're borderline-astroturfing. They're actors with scripted lines. I don't like dishonesty.

The ads make me roll my eyes too, the "It has stuff guys like..." line is awful.

However, Toyota isn't marketing the Camry or Corolla to people who normally participate on this board or ones like it. They're targeting your average non-car guy/girl American. That leaves millions upon millions of people in their marketing crosshairs. They're obviously doing something right, as those cars are among the best sellers year in and year out. The Corolla and Camry are boring to me, though the new Camry is better than previous generations. But if a non-car enthusiast was asking for a transportation appliance recommendation, they'd be near the top of my list.

Well, you've discovered how I feel about all of marketing. But I do prefer less dishonesty.

You probably wouldn't if you knew that Dave Matthews Band CD's are the greatest way to pick up fat chicks since the idea of a ham on a rope......

I agree, these commercials are rubbish. Then again, so are most of the others.

I've only seen the Laurel Coppock Toyota commercials. So either the little bit of TV I've been watching isn't the same demographics as the other commercials, or I'm oblivious.

According to Toyota, the new Camry Hybrid "handles like a sports car".

Uh, you've got that backwards. Jalopnik are the "I'm too cool" automotive hipsters. They're the ones who run "stories" like "Let's all mock F1's crashiest race car driver" (Yes, that's the actual title. It should have been called "let's make snarky comments and stupid demotivators about the 'bad driving' of someone who's a much better driver than we non-F1 drivers will ever be.") Jalopnik staff use that same snark to belittle car customizers. (Hey, not my cup of tea, either, but I don't bash people for making something that they want, or for trying to market such a vehicle to like minded individuals.) Jalopnik also has a habit of promoting haughty or sarcastic comments directed towards amateur fabricators.

The thing that got under my skin the most, though, was an article by Peter Orosz who dismissed the building of replicas as "petty striving for a car which you cannot afford." He acknowledged the difficulty and the man hours involved in building a replica, but said

Peter Orosz said:

I have never liked replicas. They are all vain transformations of cheap, little-respected cars into empty shapes approximating expensive, sought-after cars. In the process, an honest if cheap car is destroyed and an ersatz, soulless vehicle is born.

That one obviously hit pretty close to home. Is it "petty striving" to want to build something different than my daily driver? I'm building a replica, and no, I would not be able to afford the car I'm replicating. (Assuming, such a thing were ever for sale, anyway.) Should I be ashamed that I can't afford the real thing? And, for the record, I don't consider what I'm making to be any more "soulless" - or soulful - than any other car.

In a nutshell, the reason I avoid jalopnik is easy to understand: GRM is for people doing stuff. Jalopnik is for talking smack about people who are doing stuff.

I think the new beige is burnt orange, which is a lot less boring.
