Modifying my Vault Suit was one of the first things I did. I like that you can wear it as a base layer underneath anything. Road leathers and long johns can also be worn as a base layer, but they can't match a modified vault suit.
At level 6, don't be afraid to run away. Also, get down to the Drumlin Diner and kill the drug dealers. That will set you up with a good merchant and some gear. In fact, explore and craft a bit. That's a safe, steady stream of XP and fast travel locations that will help save time later in the game.
Edit: Also Trashcan Carla will start moving around to your settlements once you talk to her at the diner. I forgot that part.
I'm 12 hours in, up to level 10. Just started doing BoS stuffs. Found a power armor stuck behind a locked door at the NG armory that I can't open (Expert level). I will have you my pretty.
Also, the raiders in LExington in PA.... how do I kill them?
In response to Bobzilla.
You run and snipe the guy with the fatman, or run away till you have a bullet sponge to draw the fire or power armor or both. The door to get up to him is guarded by a bunch of raiders and a couple turrets and the raiders are of various levels (adventuring, survivalist, etc..) so it helps to be able to have a second person to absorb damage and fight off some of the baddies.
I'll tell you what I'm having a hard time is finding merchants! I've got tons of crap to unload and no one to unload it to!
Use the Drumlin Diner!
If you've got a settlement, setting up a general merchant there isn't a bad idea, either.
The thing about merchants is that they have limited caps. If you've got a ton of crap to sell, it isn't a bad idea to see if they have a fusion core or some ammunition you need and basically barter your stuff for it. That way, you get stuff you know you're going to need without having them run out of money to buy your crap.

No fusion cores but I did get some .45 ammo and stimpacks from one of the caravans for 9 pipe pistols and some other crap.

I keep reading that the vault suit is the best base...why? I'm using army fatigues that give +1 strength and +1 agility. That's far better than any vault suits I've encountered so far.
In reply to Bobzilla:
Diamond City or Goodneighbor.
In reply to calteg: The game is very flexible, so someone else's best base isn't going to be your best base. I really like Grognak Costume (melee and unarmed expert).
In reply to Bobzilla: If you don't have a companion, get the Lone wanderer perk, it's a little more difficult if you don't pick either one. I personally think that raiders are too weak to use the fat man on them; for a group, use molotov cocktails, frag grenades, and/or frag mines. At least the raiders with melee weapons will chase you into a mine.
In reply to Mr_Clutch42:
It is really fun to use the fat man on a vault full of synths....
In reply to WOW Really Paul?: I'm actually getting to some areas of the Commonwealth where raiders are quite strong. I haven't gotten far enough to get enough mininukes. I have a few missiles to go with my missile launcher, but I'm not finding many of those, either. A crowd of synths are definitely strong enough to warrant a mininuke.
I'm not sure who or what is at fault, but I lost my F4 saves last weekend...strangely JUST after siding with the BoS and taking on the Institute.
Now...I'm not saying it was synths...but the timing is awfully suspicious...
Honestly, I'm a little worried about my little 2TB Seagate drive and wondering if that's the culprit. OTOH, I've lost no other save data on any other game, so maybe it's just another Bethesda save anomaly? Who knows? The game is too damn fun to NOT be excited about the prospect of starting again.

@ Tactical Penguin: One of my saves got corrupted very early on, when I was 4 or 5 hours in. Fortunately I've played Bethesda games long enough to know that saving every 15 minutes is a must. Also, alternate your save slots.

For me, the fact that the lightweight vault suit fits underneath pretty much all of the armor types is huge. Plus 10 energy resist and 15 radiation resist is alright, too.
I now how 4 power armor suits, just found diamond city, killed a bunch of raiders and super muties..... was up until 1:30am last night.
I finally progressed the main story line to enter the railroad and institute. LoL
In reply to Bobzilla: Completing missions gives you much more experience points than anything else combined.

Since my old saves were wiped out, I decided to "wander" and basically just do stuff for the Minutemen this time around, perhaps saving the main quest line until I hit level 100 or something.
It's a LOT more fun this way, plus I feel like I'm getting legendary loot way more often than I did on my original saves. Also, putting more effort into offense-based perks rather than defense-based perks seems to be working out nicely. Who needs an OP set of armor when most enemies can't get within melee range anyway?
I started a second play thru, main is at the tipping point of who do you side with so I wanted a bit more time. This character is more charismatic than the last so I am building up settlements early.
Charisma dictates how many settlers you attract to each location. You can get 41 as a max IIRC.
The game is far more fun to wait on the main story line, and just take part in the endless side quests. Naturally there is no way to keep all the main factions happy with the outcome, but I have a hunch that will make 3 still be useful. LoL
Alright, I caved and ordered an xbox one and Fallout 4. I haven’t had any new games in a while and I’m really looking forward to this one.

I just checked my playtime. 52 hours on my first playthrough. Woof.
In reply to PseudoSport:
Get GTA as well, I'm going to try to pick that up in the next week or so.
In reply to calteg:
Last I checked I was hovering around 100hrs of playing time.
I'm doing tons of side quests and trying to correct my early build mistakes. I took a rank of science before I had ever even seen an energy weapon, it's now finally useful.
