So...as the rain and cold sets in for the winter, I am already dreaming about next riding season! A little background, I returned to motorcycling about three years ago after a nearly twenty-year hiatus. I LOVE dual sport riding! I have also spent most of my adult life involved in automotive rally events in some capacity, be it competitor, spectator, service crew, marshall, stage captain, etc. To be totally honest, at one point I aspired to compete in stage events on four wheels but it ultimately was too much hassle/expense for me, so I sold my stage car having only done rallycross. Fast forward a few years, and the interest in the sport is still there, but many of the guys I used to do stuff with are busy remodeling the house, picking up the kids from soccer, or the in-laws at the airport. Meanwhile this single guy with a single bedroom thinks about an autocross and rallycross here and there, plus riding my bike on public roads/trails on weekends instead.

I've been thinking that rally moto might be a great way to scratch the competitive itch by myself and give me a new challenge aligned with my current personal interests.

Is it as much fun as it looks? Am I delusional about the commitment involved? Have I missed the boat? I remember seeing some events local to me (Pacific NW) a couple years ago, but now the events all seem to be really far from Oregon. Should I strap my organizational boots on and try to get some local events going just so I can try it and see if it is for me? Would it be worth renting or buying a truck/trailer to drive 1000 miles for, or should I save the mileage, spend the money, and count on others going back to four wheels withing a couple hours drive?

The artist formerly known as Nonack had some good posts about his rally moto experiences. I've been looking for them for a while but can't find them. I thought they were in his RX-7 Rally car thread but couldn't find it. He would be the man to ask.

My RallyMoto bike thread: DRZ400

Another thread where someone sort of asked this question: What RallyMoto bike?

Yes it's a blast, it requires maybe 20% of the time and money of a rally car (if even that much), and yes you can do it (although I don't know about event availability out west). A number of the Eastern Canadian events have RallyMoto, as do Sandblast, Magnum Opus, Black River Stages, and most NASA RallySprints. If you have more questions fire away!

The only reason I don't do it any more is that I'm typically running a car instead, I want to get back on two wheels for another rally when I can.

Thanks for the thoughts and the linked threads. Sounds like fun! The events in your neck of the woods that you mentioned are all between 2500 and 3000 miles from me (5000-6000 round trip!) so the travel is a tough pill to swallow, especially to try it out. The NASA Rallysport calendar of events page gives me 404 errors for all the west coast events, and the local websites for their two closest events (Doo Wop and Idaho Rally) have no mention of rally moto. I think I'll hop on advrider.com and see if I can find some local knowledge to find out if west coast events just don't exist, or are just scarcely promoted and reported.

To my knowledge, it was tried out west and they got very few entries. I don't know if that means it's officially cancelled or if you just have to ask very nicely to get a rally to post a moto entry price.

If you wanted to really have the rockstar rally guy experience, I bet you could fly in and get somebody to rent you a bike for one of the east coast events

WHY!?

I'm trying not to get involved in this at all.

In reply to Brett_Murphy:

I don't understand. If you are wondering why Rally Moto had a poor turnout in the west, I'm wondering the same thing. If you are asking why I am interested at all, why not? The fun of stage rally plus the fun of motorcycle riding, all while spending less money sounds worth trying at least. Is there a better idea I'm not aware of?

No, you misunderstand. I'm a middle aged man who would love to do this for all the reasons, except barreling down a stage on two wheels seems like a poor life choice right now, no matter how much I'd love to get on board.

Ah, I see. Never mind, nothing to see here.

You'll need to log in to post.
