Yea, that's how completely fresh tires with the mold release still on them feel.
I knew they'd be slippery, but I definitely wasn't expecting the bike to fishtail at sub 1/4 throttle and sub 30mph.
Good news, I managed to keep from putting the 10 down, but man oh man are my legs sore from that battle.
I will take sandpaper and scuff new tires from now on prior to riding. Stock gearing makes this bike oh so much better too.
So I guess I know which side of the debate you'd come down on in this thread over on ADVRider. Some people got pretty intense in there...

Yep, scuffing them might not do anything though as it appears to evaporate off the tires once you get heat in them from riding. It was just under 50 degrees out yesterday, so they never really got that warm.
The outer edges are still shiney, so I'll report back once it gets warmer if it goes away.
Either way, I posted this thread as a friendly caution to others.
Just a thought. Is it possible that different manufacturers use different types of mold release agent and/or some do a better job of preparing & cleaning the tire's surface before shipping them? That could explain why people have such widely differing experiences.
I've always treated brand new bike tires with great caution, but I can't say that I've had a "marbles on ice" experience. I've also never ridden a liter bike on new tires in cold damp conditions.

That is possible for sure, these were a bit "shiney" and I know some aren't that way.

I just put a set of Metzler tires on my Burgman 650 scooter. I marked the tires to trace the lean angles. The marks indicate about 45 deg. scrub in both directions. I did not notice any slipping. Meltzer must use a sticky mold release? Still a bit chilly to ride around here in New Hampshire.
I'm of the belief that if can happen, so best to take it easy for the first few rides. No harm in being careful.

Completely different monsters here......
Stay tuned until Wed/Thurs and I'll report back if the rest evaporates.....supposed to be 70+ those two days.
