A Honda Civic dressed up like a Subaru WRC rally racer.
A VW Beetle turned into the hot rod featured in American Graffiti.
A Morris Minor bearing a striking resemblance to notorious bounty hunter Boba Fett.
In the end, though, the winner was a flamed Dodge Shadow powered by a fire-breathing turbo Dodge engine. The Dodge, aptly entered by Patrick Culkin of the Shelby Dodge Auto Club, rocketed down the quarter-mile in 11.319 seconds.
Welcome to the Grassroots Motorsports $2013 Challenge, a motorsports event that rewards creativity—and those who can watch the budget. The basics are simple: Faced with a $2013 budget cap, teams compete in drag racing, autocross competition, and concours judging. This year’s event took place November 15-16 at Auto Plus Raceway in Gainesville, Florida.
Despite the budget constraints, the Grassroots Motorsports $2013 Challenge Presented by Kumho Tire, Powered by eBay Motors, Sponsored by CRC Industries doesn’t attract heaps. For nearly 15 years, this event has shown how ingenuity outranks cash. The cars were concours clean—and fast, too, with several posting 11-second times on the drag strip.
It was an educational event, too, with eBay Motors reps on hand to show the entrants how they could then turn their cars into cash. As those on hand learned, spending a few minutes crafting the right listing can lead to nice dividends.
Full details on the event will appear in Grassroots Motorsports magazine. To request a free sample, just click here.
