While some racers prefer an agile, lower-horsepower “momentum car,” Rob Wilmoth instead prefers the “point and shoot” approach.

Mash the pedal and point the wheels where to go, and it goes,” says Wilmoth of the Audi RS3 race car he’s entered into our Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge presented by Grassroots Motorsports.

Our annual search for the fastest machine on four wheels, the Ultimate Track Car Challenge only requires car and driver to pass a safety inspection. The rest of the preparations and upgrades are up to you.

For Wilmoth’s RS3, that includes a Stage 2 tune from Unitronic, coil-overs and beefier brakes from 529 Innovations, Wavetrac limited slip differential, Aim MXm dash logger, four-point roll cage from Studio RSR, seats and harnesses from RaceQuip, plus aero upgrades from CJM Industries up front and Aerofabb out back.

In total, the Audi is good for 610 horsepower–an over 200 horsepower improvement over the factory 400 horsepower–while still making use of the stock engine block and turbocharger.

October 26-27 at Kentucky’s NCM Motorsport Park, we’ll get the chance to find out if Rob Wilmoth’s point and shoot approach to building a race car is the key to victory as the Audi RS3 takes to the track at the  2024 Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge presented by Grassroots Motorsports, which takes place alongside the Tire Rack SCCA Time Trials Nationals Powered by Hagerty.

Hi to Rob Wilmoth.  Just curious-- are you related to Doug Wilmoth who in years past was an engineer at Allis-Chalmers?

Good luck with your racing "point and shoot" efforts.  As a guy who started in H-Mod and later DS/R, I always ran engines of 750 0r 850cc displacement,  so momentum driving became second nature to me.  I was Midwest Council DS/R Champion in 1984 with my Suzuki 750cc-powered  Quasar.

Take care, go fast,

Myron Boyajian
