The ultimate recipe for inexpensive, all-wheel-drive thrills? Nick Weaver thinks he has the answer with his 2001 Audi TT.

A self-admitted fan of all things Audi-Volkswagen, Nick debuted the TT in the 2022 Grassroots Motorsports $2000 Challenge Presented by Tire Rack with a few modifications from stock.

In addition to a bigger intake and turbo inlet pipe, Nick also installed a short-throw shifter, tuned the ECU, upgraded the diverter valve and added coil-overs.

Nick notes that, in the end, the TT put a smile on his face–but will 2023 be the year the Audi delvers a trophy, too? There’s only one way to find out.

What is the $2000 Challenge? It’s our annual low-buck automotive festival that celebrates autocross, drag racing and ingenuity, which returns to Gainesville Raceway in Gainesville, Florida, on a new weekend for 2023, May 27-28.

The real challenge is in the event's name, however, as entries are required to prepare their vehicles for less than $2000. Each of these sub-$2000 cars will compete in autocross and drag racing sessions followed by concours judging the next day.

Rather see if more money equals more speed? Over-budget builds are also allowed to enter. Need more time to get your build ready? Spectators are welcome, and there will also be a Hagerty Cars & Caffeine, swap meet, model car concours and even a post-event track day at the Florida International Rally & Motorsport Park.

Think your low-buck racer or over-budget car is up to the challenge? Enter your build here, and learn more about the $2000 Challenge at 2000challenge.com.

The Grassroots Motorsports $2000 Challenge is presented by Tire Rack, in association with CRC Industries and Miller Electric, with trophies from ACI Automotive & Performance and Trackkrat.

There's a guy that runs a red roadster in SSM locally.  Not sure what's gone on under the hood, but fat Hoosiers help. It looks fun to drive.

I could have bought one of these for almost nothing a few months ago, but I'd already decided that a 911 was what I really wanted. The wife had agreed to another project, but getting 2 in 2 months would have put a strain on the marriage, so I passed on the running and driving low mile TT quatro coupe for $800 that just needed a clutch job and some paint.

I wish I'd had the bandwidth for the car, I think it would have been a ton of fun, but that's how things go.

Regarding the topic of the TT in general, I recently saw an article/interview with the designer of the TT on carbuzz.com, and the car was almost a Porsche, but the folks at Porsche and Audi apparently didn't play well together.

I would talk to Freeman Thomas often at car shows and he always loved the retro look of things which you can see in the TT with the baseball glove seats etc ,

I think Freeman is now involved with the new Meyers Manx EV dune buggy.
