Quick, what’s the very first car Toyota sold in the United States? If your answer started with “Toyota,” you’re wrong–sort of.
The actual answer is the Toyopet Crown, a car that failed so hard it caused Toyota to leave the U.S. market for nearly four years. Today, however, the Toyopet resides inside the treasure trove of significant Toyotas at the company’s U.S. headquarters in Texas.
Each model on display–including a gold-painted 2000GT, and ‘80s Camry and even a Van–represents key points in the Japanese car maker’s history in the United States, which you can read all about now over on Classic Motorsports.
