How do you kick off an epic, cross-country road trip?

How about with a few laps around an equally epic facility: Daytona International Speedway.

That was this morning’s scene as the Racing to End Alzheimer's BMW M4 made a few circuits around the famed speedway–yes, the full 24-hour course–before heading west. Final destination: WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

The reason for all of this? To raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s and dementia care and research.

From the group’s site:

All our marketing and administration costs are paid by Legistics, Inc. precisely so that every dollar we raise benefits one of the organizations we support. Not a nickel goes to the racing costs, either, which are covered by Legistics and our co-sponsors. So rest assured: when you donate money to us, it first gets matched by our corporate partners, then it all goes to help Fund the Care and Fund the Cure.”

Other stops on the 4000-mile journey will include Dublin, Virginia, home of BimmerWorld, as well as the Nantz National Alzheimer Center at Houston Methodist Hospital and UCLA’s Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care program.

Progress will be charted via Racing to End Alzheimer's Facebook page.

Very cool program. So many of us have had someone close afflicted by Alzheimer's, such a sad thing. Surely a cure can be found.

Yes, hopefully we see a cure.

If anyone sees a black and purple M4 in the next week or so, give them a wave.

And small peek behind the scenes. Here's what the car looked like a week before. (I got to pick it up from the dealer and deliver it to the sign shop.)

And the route. Not quite 4000 miles.
