Not trying to be a wise arse, but is anyone else running a similar engine? Look and see what others are running before finding out the hard (and expensive)way what works and doesn't.The accumulator might save an engine, but could hide the problem.
Please insert new engine.
We'll be building a new engine using the pieces of four other engines. Fun stuff.
The Moroso accumulator should save our next engine from a similar fate.
We attended the Southeast Divisonal Championship event hosted by the Dixie Region in Moultrie, Georgia, a few weeks ago. We were in the middle of our second runs on Saturday when we noticed some clicking from the engine. The noise got worse, and we trailered the car after our third runs.
A post-race postmortem indicated that we had spun the No. 4 connecting rod bearing. We had a similar problem with our first ZX10R engine—although in that case, we spun No. 3 and No. 4 due to oil starvation. We’ve come to the painful conclusion that our oil pan is simply not up to the task of keeping oil near the pickup for the oil pump. We’ll have to come up with an alternate solution.
Part of that solution will be the installation of a Moroso (http://www.moroso.com) accumulator. This 1.5-quart accumulator will feed oil to the engine in the event of a loss or decrease in system pressure. At less than $200, this 8-pound device should help our engines stay together in the future.
We will be rebuilding this ZX10R engine. So far we’ve sourced a good used crankshaft ($230) as well as pistons with connecting rods ($65). We’ll be ordering connecting rod bolts, gaskets and a head gasket shortly. The only big-ticket item will be a new oil pan with an alternative oil pickup. We’re still researching that decision now.

Actually, some people are running ZX10s----plenty for dwarf cars, but very few for DSR/BMods. The problem is the pan--and we're working to fix that correctly. The accumulator is just added insurance above and beyond that.
On air cooled VW's their used to be a small sump with an extended pickup. Bolted on in place of the screen plate.
Look at the bright side. You're getting really good at pulling the motor really fast. :)
Two questions: 1. Since you're mixing and matching parts, will you be balancing everything? 2. I understand, the original motor is different but is there anything relatable design-wise to the newer powerplant(s) regarding oiling? After all, the original engine stayed together so what is /was different about it?
