Shakedown and No Breakdown

Update by Per Schroeder to the LeGrand Mk 18 project car

After all of the thrashing we did in the fall to get the LeGrand ready for the PRI Trade Show, we took a little break from the car. The PRI show was fun, but we’re more about go than show. The 2011 season is approaching, so we brought the now-completed car to our Ocala Gran Prix test track for some shakedown testing.

Because we replaced so many parts in the suspension and braking systems, we wanted to make sure that we wouldn’t have any problems at our next event. After some low-and-slow testing, we cranked it up a notch and blasted off some hot laps, breaking our previous lap record at Ocala Gran Prix with a scorching 32.1 seconds. That’s just 0.3 second off the official shifter-kart lap record for this track configuration with chicane.

With just a little brake bleeding, the car should be ready for the Dixie National Tour in a few weeks.

Wow. Just wow. Hopefully one day I can be half the driver (and half the size so that I can fit into one of those cars).

Are you running without shoulder belts here? Surprised at how much your upper body moves.

Are the tires spinning up coming off some of the corners? In any case the car looks pretty planted.

Yea, good catch---I was running with just a lap belt for this first session, as I wasn't sure how long I was going to be running/jumping out of car.

There's a little bit of wheelspin, but that's mostly when I bump the curbing a little.

Ahh...the rear brakes really did need to be bled. Much firmer pedal now.

What tires are you running with that car? Is it some super soft compound? Did you really need to cool down the tires after one lap?

I really want a LeGrand now.

Hoosier R25B compound slicks is what we Solo on. Some guys run them on the track for time trials but they probably would get too hot during a full race.

That steering wheel is crazy small.

You seem to have to take your hand off the wheel a lot to position your hands.

Still that thing is sweet.

You'll need to log in to post.
