We Can’t Resist Junkyard Upgrades

Oh no! It looks like someone disassembled a Saab in our garage again.

We know that we said we weren’t going to fiddle around too much with the Saab, but we had to replace an inner axle seal, and that meant we had to pull the axles out. At that point, we decided to also pull the hubs in order to check our CV joints. Then we decided to rebuild everything and upgrade to the ventilated rotors from a 1986-87 Saab 900 Turbo. You get the idea.

The Turbo brake upgrade is a bolt-on and just requires the Turbo hub assembly, wheel bearing, outer CV joint, rotor and brake caliper “carrier.” We got the used hub, rotor and carrier from Luke at www.saabrally.com and ordered new wheel bearings and CV joints from an online vendor.

Interestingly enough, once we get these new hubs on, we can also change direction a bit and upgrade to Wilwood calipers. The narrow mount Wilwood Dynalite calipers have the same mounting bolt pattern as the Saab calipers for a slick install, which would yield much better braking.

Nope. You use the stock 99 caliper (and just the Turbo pad holder) or you can size the Wilwood calipers to match the stock MC.
