Excellent use of the word apropos.
After breaking in our BMW 318is project, we decided to take it on the Smoky Mountain Tour, which is something we put on at our sister publication, Classic Motorsports. This five-day driving tour included such opportunities as driving the Tail of the Dragon, doing touring laps at Atlanta Motorsports Park and visiting the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta. All while driving hours-worth of amazing winding roads. The tour was a great test for our newly finished car.
This trip was especially apropos since we had found this car in Highlands, NC while putting this tour on just two years ago.
Our time at VIR and driving through the mountains had given us an inkling of how fun this car was going to be on mountain roads, but we had no idea how fun. With nearly 3000 miles, our engine was broken in now and continued to develop more power. The cool mountain air seemed to help us make even more horsepower, too.
Everyone who drove this car on our tour came away with a smile on their face. Upon entering switchbacks, the car pushes slightly. Stabbing the throttle changes that understeer to very controllable oversteer, as the limited-slip differential kicks in and you can easily power out of any corner, no matter how sharp.
The modifications we made, combined with the light weight of this car and increased power make this car a terror on mountain roads, and all without compromising comfortability.
Our 318is has had no issues and used less than one quart of oil in 3000 miles of hard driving. What will we tackle next?
