Reaching under the steering wheel was inconvenient, so as the engine and transmission were out, I cut off the shift lever, welded a small plate to its remaining stub and connected the plate to a tube running outside to a shift lever which is mounted at its bottom onto a hemispherical joint (I have used ball joints also for this in other cars. Either one is as good as the other)
