All 5 speed A1 VW’s use a linkage to shift the transmission and a cable to actuate the clutch. For my project I had to convert to hydraulic clutches and fabricate a Rube Goldberg style shift assembly to control the rear transmission. Neither my clutch setup or shifter circus worked very well. Driving with the old setup was bliss and piss, blissful acceleration punctuated by tense moments during every shift while I wondered if both transmissions would engage the same gear.
This will be no more!
I have purchased a pair of 02A transmissions, they’re cable shifted/hydraulic clutch units with great big clutch disks.
