1955 would go down in history as one of the deadliest runnings of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in history after the No. 20 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, piloted by Pierre Levegh, catapulted over an earthen embankment and into a crowd of spectators.
More than 80 of those spectators were killed, with some 180 more injured in the accident. Levegh died instantly when he was ejected from the car.
This animated short film details the events leading up to the accident, as well as the aftermath–including the race official’s decision to continue the event, as well as Mercedes-Benz’s eventual withdrawal.
