We had those when I was a kid in SF. Among my childhood memories is the frequent stops with the driver getting out to put the followers back onto the cables...

I never lived in Philadelphia but I had family who did. I'm old enough to remember seeing those in regular service action around the city. Locally they were called "trackless trolleys". There are still some in service but only in the really old neighborhoods in North Philly.
My 2.75 year old daughter stole the latest GRM from me while taking a break from working on her Porsche.
