Talks were held between the Football Association and the Metropolitan Police this morning and, with widespread disorder spreading across the capital last night, a decision was made to cancel the match.
A statement was posted on the FA website shortly before 10am. It said: “It is with regret that tomorrow’s (Wednesday 10 August) international fixture with Holland at Wembley has been called off.”
More than 70,000 tickets had been sold for the match, with the FA expected to fully refund fans.
The Holland team had been due to travel to London later today and it was decided that it was better to make the decision now rather than wait until later in the afternoon.
The FA had always said that they would make the decision based on police advice and the reason for calling off the game is understood to relate not just to the possibility of disorder spreading to the Wembley area of London, but issues relating to police resources and transport.
