Anything with a grill that large and no radiator behind it needs to be destroyed.
I hate those ugly things.
The Spring used Fiat 850 "bits" in a POOR attempt to mimic a vintage MG. (This was back in the days when kit cars that could be put on VW air-cooled chassis occasionally looked like MG-TC or TDs) I guess the idea from this car's manufacturer was : Hey, there are folks who buy/build fake MGs with the engine in the back already....why don't we produce them in a factory for those schmucks who can't/won't ever finish a kit?
I remember when the Spring appeared on the COVER of Car & Driver....yes, the cover!!! New, these things, if I remember correctly, cost all of $3,000. To find one complete and running? Hmmm, you'd REALLY have to want a Spring or it's Fiat "bits" to pay $1,500 for it. In the defense of this particular example? It's one of the very few not painted mustard yellow, as it seems as tho 99% of Springs were that color.
We had one in Classic Motorsports's Ran When Parked section a while back. Someone sent in the photos, but I happened to pass the same car a few weeks earlier. The car was in San Mateo, Fla. Last time we drove by, it was gone. But yes, Fiat 850-based.
They are not a "kit car" at all, and think of what else could have been purchased for $3k in 1969. Not very stylish though I see them sell at $2500 all the time. I've not seen a mint one for sale.
No they weren't kit cars. They were hand crafted, coach built automobiles but they definately have a kit car vibe to them.
David, if you could remember where in San Mateo that car was, I bet I could track down what happened to it. I grew up in East Palatka, which is right there. I know there used to be an MG in a field over in San Mateo right where 100 meets 17.

Bingo, or a big block Charger.
It was sadly styled but it is still desirable to someone.
