I've got to second Raze on the "you're the only one to get me this year"
Ha, my apologies to all those who were "gotten" I guess it's good to know I can still do that, my wife doesn't buy any of my E36 M3 anymore. If I'm telling her something weird but true I have to have a google search ready to back it up these days.
If my schedule doesn't take a huge turn at the last minute (as it seems to want to do these days) I am going to try to pull the Wartburg out of storage this weekend and get her fired up for those who have messaged me privately about running condition.
She is in "as ran" condition from the 2010 GRM challenge, it was literally driven off the trailer and into storage after the event and hasn't moved since so I'm sure a battery charging and fresh fuel are in order but otherwise I see little reason why it won't run again in short order.
Well in preparation for tomorrow I started digging out the Wartburg a little tonite. I wanted to get it clear enough to figure out why the steering went out when I was pulling it in the garage after GRM.
My initial thought was that the u-joint between the column and the steering rack came disconnected, it had happened once before although I put it back together with loctite red so I was interested to see how that failed.
Then I got to thinking and trying the steering and there's still resistance on the wheel, if the u-joint had gone it would spin freely. I made just enough room to stick my head under there and at first I couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. Then it hit me.
If you look at the rack mount here you'll see there are 2 bolt holes, bolts go through these and into the rack to mount it. Those bolts are gone, the entire rack is just moving around in there on its own.
On the upside, its an easy fix which will also see liberal doses of loctite red. On the downside, or potential downside, holy crap, if those had let out on the autox course or drag strip at GRM someone could have been seriously hurt. Check your bolts everyone.
Under my current garage-less, in school, low cash, situation, my insanity is unfortunately already over capacity.
Still not running, battery has been charging all day but is barely cranking the motor, I think it's toast. Everything else is looking good, steering is back to functional now.
I'll post updates here so the interested parties know the current state.
Lest we forget there's still a lovely little Yugo that needs a good home too ;)
Aaaand, she runs again. Just went out to close up and push her into the shop and decided to give it one more shot, fired right up :) Drove her into the shop, forgot what a tight squeeze it was to get in that car.
