Indeed :(

$900 and a 460 to go with it? SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!! This thread is giving me too many bad ideas. I need to stop thinking about old F-100s.

That's hitting below the belt. I'm a MoPar guy who really doesn't need to go all the way out to AZ to get yet another project.
Ok, since I am in the relatively target-rich environment of the PNW, I was wondering - exactly what makes a truck a good candidate for this kind of project?
From the trucks posted so far, it looks like the recipe is:
a) short wheel base
b) 2wd
c) pre-emissions era (or at least pre fuel injection)
d) V-8 or (swapability for one)
e) stepside preferred (???)
What else? Does it have to be a 1/2 ton, or is it only because you can only find SWB trucks in 3/4 or 1 ton? Does having a manual matter, or is that just something to swap in later (if desired)?

This post started off as a posting of a Ford version of the Roadkill "Muscle Truck":
Which is the 1974 Chevy seen here. Frieburger and Finnigan swapped in a HOT LS motor and have done all kinds of fun things with it. See back episodes here
So I guess the formula is short wheel base, step side, and yes V-8 power.
(some deviations from the step-side have been made.)
If it really is as solid and clean as it looks and an honest 85K I'd pay that little extra if I didn't need to update my tetanus shot.
How can it be a muscle truck with a small block? We're talking big iron here, boys, big block or go home. 460s, 454s, 440s. That's what you need.
Am I the only one that was never a fan of step sides from the 70s 80s? THe cabs just looked to big compared to the bed. Give me the normal short bed.
The F100 I had was this same paint and body but it had the white sheetmetal front end instead of the chrome Ranger package:
I'm personally a fan of the "fleetside" SWB trucks, but the step side trucks get a pass from me too. Growing up, my dad had two F150 "Flareside" trucks: a 1983 2WD 300 I6 XLT, and a 1992 4WD 5.0 V8 with the Nite trim package. I would have kept the 1992, but it was getting really rusty and we had no place to put it, because my dad bought a new truck and I didn't have my house yet.
My next project vehicle is definitely going to be a truck like this. If possible, I want to build a clone of this:
In reply to SilverFleet:
Here is my sweptline Dodge during the "drive" part of my "Fly and Drive" from the high desert of Cali to Chicago.
I still wouldn't tun down a step side, though.
In reply to Cooter:
I thought the sweptline ones were like this?
Anyway, your truck is nice! A friend of mine has a 72 D100 that he bought a little over 10 years ago before this muscle truck trend got going.
Obviously, it's the one on the right (the one on the left has a 5.3 and a T56 in it, but that's for another thread). It was an old farm truck from NC with a sloppy 318 and three-on-the-tree. It now has a 440 and a 4-speed on the floor.
It also poops beer cans, as it should.
(Might be NSFW because swears, so mute it!) https://youtu.be/eYCReLN7kCk
there ya go again, nice find. thing about these old trucks are the later model factory parts that carry over and the huge aftermarket now. step sides were prolly overdone back in the day but they're back now... at least w/ me. I'm likin' this better than the F-150's now.
