Call him/her about the car for $1. I have done this before and if they hang up, flag the ad. I love messing with these sellers. I call or email them and play dumb at first, tell them I am very excited to purchase the car for $1. When they come back with the "oh, well the car is $3500, I just put $1 in the price to get more views." I just keep going in the same vein as if I don't understand, repeating over and over again about coming over to pick up the car for $1. I tell them that I recognize that maybe they have two or three cars for sale right now, but I am interested in the one where the asking price is $1, not the more expensive one. I move on to my generous flexibility in terms of payment; a single dollar bill or four quarters or ten dimes, seller's preference. I even offer to some pick it up and drive it or tow it home.
I know, I need a new hobby...but it pisses me off when people don't understand the simple concept of asking price, or else they are so dumb they think that people looking for parts cars under $200 are suddenly going to switch gears after being misled about the price and pay them five grand for their rusty hunk of junk upon hearing the "good news" that the price is way higher than what they have listed on Craigslist.
Worst case scenario, you might have eat crow and buy that car for $1.
