Why did the '57 Chevy become the clichéd and ubiquitous automotive icon attached to all kitschy '50s imagery, when Ford actually outsold Chevy for that year?

Most prefer the styling of the 1957 Chevy over the Ford. Then there is the eternal Chevy SBC engine, compared to the forgettable Ford 292/312 Y block. The former left a slightly greater mark on automotive racing history.

A 57 Dodge or Chrysler would have eaten either of them for lunch, with motors and power....but that doesnt matter. 55-57 Chev's became instant hot rods and remain icons to this day. The simplicity, availability, and aftermarket support of the small block Chevy motor, along with styling and price were factors. In 57 a maxed out Belair V8 fuel injected option was 283 hp while the Mopar was a 390hp hemi. But, such a Chrysler was very expensive and a Chevy was not. And thus it became the working mans street rod.

I prefer the pre-"tri five" chevy 210's in terms of appearance.
