I took that to be the oil cooler with fan and filter.
My FIL used to be an air-cooled VW guy. He had a ton of Baja's in his life. Said he could mount 15 inch BFG terrains on them and it would hold the car up without air in any of the tires. Said if he ran into anything he'd open the frunk lid and pound out the dents with the palm of his hand.
