and ran pretty good..

Some minor rust in the pans...

What a bummer.. I may try and buy it back.. but I am pretty overwhelmed with projects at the moment..

86 was the 4-door Omni

87 was the 2-door Charger

It's been on CL for a while. I think this is the third time he's posted this ad.

Why is "farm" one of his key words?!

Sounds like a fun car to monkey with. I bet he'd take $1k with cash under his nose. Especially if he's posted more than once.

I've been watching this ad too, ronholm, what's the story on it? I have a few TDs sitting in my garage and have always wanted a GLHS, it would certainly go to a good home!

Any major issues?

In reply to jtm8bd:

Likely the standard Dodge Omni issues:

door handles break unless you know the secret handshake (aka pull up, not out on the handle)

ronholm mentioned the rusty floors, which is common as the cowls tend to leak under the windshield because the sealant breaks and fails.

Underhood heat is a major issue with the smaller Omni engine bays, wiring gets cooked and can cause odd problems.

Special radiator/intercooler combo is a custom recore to rebuild and they tend to crud up badly, especially if a headgasket has been lost or tap water has been used to fill the system.

Interesting ergonomics, lack of collapsible steering column (the steering wheel collapsed instead)

Add 175hp boosted power to the stock transaxle and they like to go boom if you abuse them. The factory tune for the GLH-S kept the boost low at low speeds to save the transaxle, so boost issues could be related to speed sensor issues (and idle issues). Use good fluid and add the differential brace and the chro-moly bearing plate and they'll last a little longer. Another option is to toss it and put a later A520/555 or 523/568 from a later turbo car in it.

Most of these problems are easily solved with some elbow grease and parts sourcing.

With all of that said, I wish I could have another turbo Omni. I miss my older brother's GLH-S and my GLH-T's and would trade my 87 CSX straight across for a turbo Omni in heartbeat, especially a GLH-S. There is just something endearing about the damned things. Much like how people love their MK1 GTi's, T-D folks either love or hate the Omni, many love them.

John Spiva still has his GLH-S and started his bushing business to support his car and others! http://www.polybushings.com

I have a spare TII engine and transmission fresh from a performance rebuild...hmmm

Here... Some issues more major than others.. It was not a perfect car... I'll post pictures..

I struggled for a while with the car trying to idle fast. I can't remember what exactly fixed it.. But I checked out everything.. Cleaned all the grounds, checked all sensors.. Tried several LM's..

It as a socketed LM and was running on 87 electronics.

I bought the car from a club member probably 8 years ago.. It needed a few minor things and then I drove it for a LONG time.. I killed the original engine with sticky tires whipping around a cloverleaf near my house.. The car sat in my shop for 4 years or so until last year about this time. I then installed a good strong used engine in the car from a 88 Shelby Z.. It was a low mileage used but old engine.. But it would have had the big rods, forged crank... ect... Then I did all the injector/ LM/MAP upgrades.

It ran really strong.

over the summer my sailing habit got worse.. I picked up a 87 CSX among other things and put both the CSX and the GLHS up for sale figuring I would keep which ever sold first and ended up selling them both..

I sent the kid with a bunch of parts including the original engine. When he came back to pick up some other spares I was trying to unload he was complaining of a knock... He was driving the car and it sounded fine to me.. and ran strong.. I suspect it had a lifter noise or something he was hearing.. but I don't know.. I didn't build that engine.. It was stone stock... so it could have been anything.. I sure didn't hear anything that would have worried me..

I guess he tore down the engine with hopes of building something.. and yeah...

The only really major thing I know of is the car was 'wrecked' at an autocross YEARS ago.. (took the car over a curb). One of the original wheels was destroyed (which the owner before me kept) and it MAY need a tiny bit of a frame pull to be perfect. Most people wouldn't be able to spot this. When I told the kid he looked at me like I was crazy because he didn't see anything wrong. But if you look at the car you will notice the side skirt and the fender don't line up perfect.. The door fits fine.. ect.. but it is there... and if IIRC one of the things I replaced YEARS ago when I first bought the car was the control arm on that side..

The was a tiny spot of rust on the hatch, and a bit in the floorpan.

Other than that it handled and drove pretty darn good.. Still had the Konis on the rear.. and IIRC I sent the kid with a rebuildable set of konis for the front.

Here are the pix of it from when I had it..

My dad bought one of those new, it was pretty fun but broken a lot. I wouldnt mind having one, but I would probably swap in an A555 transaxle and a 2.5 longblock too with 89 computer and wiring (that would get rid of 95% of the stuff that broke often). It seems like many of the forged crank TII engines have bad rod bearings, not sure what causes that though.

The oil feed for the turbo is oversized, robs oil from the bottom end. Garrett spec'd 1/8" tubing, Chrysler went to 1/4" because the 1/8" might break off and cause a fire and the engines would last the warranty period with the slightly larger tubing.

Another thought is that the forged bottom end cars typically came in heavier cars (Daytona Shelby's were all of 3200lbs) and the extra load of a slightly small engine (2.2) trying to haul that fat bastard away from a line might contribute? Hard to say exactly as the oiling systems in those engines (like many FWD motors) has a lot of room for improvement.

As to the engine idle issue, there is an intake brace on those early 2-piece manifolds that if you don't plug the holes or put the brace on you'll get a hellacious vacuum leak. Another thought is the vacuum pieces for the HVAC (which is mostly manually operated with cables and levers) could be leaking or the booster, etc....

Oh trust me. Unless the manifold was leaking at the head it wasn't a vac leak.

I tried everything. And I have never been without a turbo dodge in the last 18 year's.

I can't recall what it was which nearly fixed it

Could be injector seals or one of the fittings in the manifold or even the stupid PCV elbow. On our cars we made our own PCV elbows from copper tubing soldered together. The throttle bodies like to gum up, especially in the idle bypass area. You can clean it out and reset the AIS stepper motor. But yeah chasing that stuff can drive ya batty, had a 87 Shekby Daytona that had a start issue that I eventually traced to a bad ground behind the Power Module. That sucked!

I've had TD's since 95 and I think we've had nearly everyone of the cars at one time or another, except for the VNTs or the T3's, wanted to though. :)

Like I said, I'd jump on it with both feet, fix the rust and drive the piss out of it!

Same car? Wearing the same rims as the one above, but no bumpers, and has Daytona enthusiast power buckets (COMFY seats, but heavy) and it's across the state.

I'm gonna go with same car based on the identical patterns of Chrysler Paint Disease on the hatch...

I also think its the same...look at the "Intercooler" decal - the "ER" part is messed up the same way as the pics posted above.

Original posting is deleted, how much was it listed for in the link in the first post?
